About the Tour

This walking tour is a trip back in time to explore some of Dublin's most iconic landmarks. We’ll take in some of Georgian Dublin along with city parks, traditional bars, cathedrals and many other famous sites on a stroll across this charm-laden city. You’ll also hear fun facts and tales about its history, culture and people – like rock band U2 and the rebellious Daniel O'Connell as well more ordinary folk.

While we walk you’ll notice how lively Dublin is with some 751 pubs. A lot of them are beautifully decorated, but O'Neill's opposite the Molly Malone statue is one of the best on our route. The food is excellent too. Dublin also has an abundance of museums. There are 45 in all and most of them are free to visit. Two of the best are the National History Museum and the Little Museum of Dublin. I’ll guide you to both of them, and I highly recommend popping into them either before, after or during our tour.

When I arrived back to live in Dublin I felt a strong urge to indulge myself in getting to know my City again, I was like a tourist in my own city and gained a great deal of knowledge from exploring, reading and generally immersing myself in Dublin's history, culture and its people. My name is Dave Kavanagh and I am a native of Dublin, I'm going to show you around Dublin today and we will be visiting some of Dublin's most iconic buildings. We will be exploring the history, culture and people of this great city.

If you are standing in front of and facing St Patrick's Cathedral, then you're in the right spot to start the tour. St Patrick's Cathedral was founded in 1191 by Archbishop John Comyn, it's the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland. It's a church of the Anglican communion and is the tallest church in Dublin standing at 43 meters tall and it's also Dublin's largest church.

The Cathedral is dedicated to St Patrick and it's thought that St Patrick used water from the river Poddle which runs under the Street to the left of the Cathedral to baptise people in this area in the fifth century and a wooden church was built here to mark this event. St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and we celebrate him on the 17th of March every year with an international parade and festival. St Patrick's day is not only celebrated in Dublin and the rest of Ireland but also throughout the world, the largest St Patrick's day parade is in New York.

The Cathedral is headed by the dean or senior cleric and the most famous of these Dean's was Jonathan Swift who is better known for his writings most notably Gullivers Travels. Swift served as dean of St Patrick's from 1713 until his death in 1745. He is buried in the Cathedral.

St Patrick's Cathedral choir school located beside the cathedral is the oldest school in Ireland founded in 1432 by Richard Talbot who was the Archbishop of Dublin at the time. If you turn around so that your back is to the Cathedral, you'll see the Cathedral grammar school across the street and slightly to your left. It was founded in 1547.

We are going to leave now and move to our next destination Christchurch Cathedral which is just 300 meters away. With your back to St Patrick's Cathedral, please walk to your right and turn right at the corner onto Patrick Street also named after St Patrick.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

There are a plethora of Coffee shops along the route one of my favourites is Keoghs on Trinity Street, there are 45 museums in Dublin city we will be passing by some including the one I like best the History and Archeology Museum.
There are 751 pubs in Dublin and there are many on our route, I would recommend stopping at O'Donoghues it's one of the stops on the tour and it's a traditional Irish music pub.

Keep an eye out for the cobbled stone streets and be aware of uneven payments, as this is Dublin it rains a lot so please bring an umbrella and wear comfortable shoes, please only cross the road at pedestrian crossings.
