Derrie Danders: From the Walled City to Coleraine by Train
About the Tour
The Derry/Londonderry to Coleraine railway line is one of the most scenic rail routes in Ireland. On this audio tour, you'll hear the story of this remarkable coastal journey, from a city shaped by siege and emigration to a coastline carved by ancient myth and wartime history. You'll also discover how this very line was nearly closed forever in 2003.
The tour starts at the North West Transport Hub in Derry/Londonderry, a Grade B listed station originally built in 1873. As the train pulls away, you'll take in views of the River Foyle and the Peace Bridge, whose deliberately twisting design reflects the complicated path of peace in Northern Ireland. You'll pass Lisahally Port, where approximately 40 surrendered German U-Boats were moored at the end of World War II, and follow the river as it widens into Lough Foyle and meets the North Atlantic.
Travelling inland past Binevenagh mountain – said to have inspired the purple-headed mountain
in the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful – you'll return to the coast for the sweeping seven-mile stretch of Benone and Downhill beaches. The tour then plunges through two Victorian railway tunnels, blasted through solid rock between 1846 and 1852, before pulling into the seaside village of Castlerock and continuing along the River Bann to the final stop at Coleraine station.
On this 45-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- See the Foyle Bridge, built with steel sections floated upriver from the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast
- Learn how Lisahally Port served as a key Allied naval base, HMS Ferret, during the Battle of the Atlantic
- Spot the Mussenden Temple perched on the clifftop above Downhill beach
- Hear the legend of the blind Irish harpist Denis O'Hampsey, who reportedly lived to 112 and fathered a child in his 80s
- Cross the Bann Railway Bridge, the only operational lifting railway bridge in Northern Ireland
- Discover how this region inspired C.S. Lewis's fictional kingdom of Narnia
Sit back, look out, and let the landscape tell its story.

I am an accountant by profession but a historian by passion. In October 2018, I established Derrie Danders Walking and Audio Tours and seek to deliver "historically accurate" and "politically neutral" tours of my home city, where I have been born and bred. I am extremely proud of my city and love telling visitors of its role in many of the conflicts and historical events of the past and am optimistic of its important role in the ongoing peace process in the future.
I am an authentic story teller of local history.
I am pleased to be assisted by Bronagh from BM Tours Ireland in my French language tour, by Erin from Tutours in my Spanish language tour and by Terry from Walled City Tours in my Cityside, Bogside and Walled City West Tour.
In addition to listening to my range of audio tours, why not also book a real walking tour, both private or public small group walking tours - available direct through my website. I offer a range of specialised history tours too.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins outside the Derry/Londonderry railway station at the North West Transport hub in the Waterside area of the city. It involves a walk through the station to the platform and thereafter you should be seated on the train, preferably on the left side facing forward.
We would recommend getting to train station about 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time to allow sufficient time for Location 1 (outside station) and Location 2 (on train) to play fully before the train departs.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
There are only 3 station stops along this route.
Firstly Bellarena Station though this quite distant from nearby attractions and will require a long walk or access to a car or public transport by bus.
Castlerock village and beach is very accessible on foot from the station and a visit here is recommended.
Coleraine town centre is a 5-10 minute walk from the station and again is worth a visit.
Best time of day
This tour can be done anytime the train is running on this route, but to appreciate the dramatic scenery it should be done in daylight hours
Precautions
Please be careful getting on and off the train from the platforms . Check timetables in advance of travelling to ensure train is running and then also station screens or with staff that you are going to the correct platform. Remember to bring all your belongings and luggage with you when exiting the train.
