The Peace Bridge is a footbridge with a thesis. Opened in 2011 across the River Foyle, its pronounced S-curve is no accident: the designers intended it as a deliberate statement that the peace process is not straightforward but takes many twists and turns. It is now one of Derry's most recognisable landmarks.
The bridge connects the city centre to Ebrington Square, a former British Army and Naval barracks that dates from the 1850s. During the Second World War, the base, then known as HMS Ferret, was a key hub for hunting German U-Boats protecting Atlantic convoys. In 1945, surrendering U-Boats came up the Foyle to give themselves up.
VoiceMap's tours use the Peace Bridge as their destination and framing device, tracing Derry's arc from the Great Siege of 1688 through wartime service and the Troubles, arriving here as evidence of how far the city has come.
