My name is Rasmus Bitsch and I will be taking you on a tour through the life and work of possibly the most important Danish thinker of all time: Søren Kierkegaard.

Now let's get started: Turn until you're facing a big building with six large columns out front. That is the courthouse. To the right of the courthouse is bank.

These two symbols of power - The Law and The Capital - must be topics for another day, because this walk is about something less imposing and physical, but perhaps more important and frightening: the question of your very existence!

Now I won't claim to be able to tell you why you are here on earth or relieve you from your existential angst, but I will give you an introduction to the life and work of the existentialist philosopher Kierkegaard. Perhaps after walking around his native Copenhagen you will want to go to one of the city's used bookstores and pick up your own copy of one of his books. My favourites are "Either Or" and "The Concept of Anxiety"!

Now let's walk right up to the bank. There, you will find a small, grey plaque with the name Søren Kierkegaard, and his birthday - the 5th of May 1813. This wasn't the building Kierkegaard was born in. That building was not deemed worth keeping... perhaps because of Kierkegaard's fall from grace and status as intellectual outcast when he died in 1855! So eventually, this became a bank. But nevertheless, this was where he was born.

Let's start walking and move on from the innocent infant to the young, aspiring philosopher and writer. Turn your back to the bank. Can you see the red Shanghai Restaurant on the corner? Go towards that.
