Mary Jane Cryan
American-Irish writer and historian Mary Jane Cryan has been living in Italy since 1965 working in the fields of international education, journalism and tourism. A Vatican guide during Holy Year 1975, she has also worked with Elderhostel and set up study abroad programs for American universities in Rome and Viterbo. Her byline has appeared in academic journals, guidebooks and magazines in Italian and English and during a four year hiatus in the USSR she was on the staff of Moscow Magazine.
When not busy writing about central Italy in her restored historic palazzo nestled between Rome and Civitavecchia, she can be found sailing the Mediterranean bringing history to life as enrichment and destination speaker on luxury cruise ships (especially Azamara).

Directions to Starting Point
Cruise passengers will arrive at the starting point-Largo della Pace information area- with the free port shuttle buses. After the tour, you can take one of the free shuttle buses to return to your Cruise embarkation terminals and cruise ships.
For those wishing to take the 1.5 hour voyage to Rome by train, our advice is to buy the BIRG Ticket €12, which gives access to public transport for the day. The BIRG can be purchased directly at the station.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Raphael house (open 3-5 pm or by appointment ), Archeology Museum, historic churches, Corso Centocelle and Corso Marconi shopping areas, public markets. For best pizza-Mastro Titta, best gelato-Chalet del PIncio. My favorite restaurants are Da Baffone, Corso Garibaldi for al fresco dining , and Bistro at Hotel San Giorgio in the evening. Locals favorites include Trinity Pub on Via Trieste , Holo's vegan cafe, Via Istria. For beaches -Locals go to rocky San Agostino, a short taxi ride away, or Santa Severa, a 10 minute train ride south towards Rome, with sandy beaches and a castle .
Best time of day
Mornings are best for shops, museums, churches and markets are open. In summer, avoid the hottest midday hours and don't miss the spectacular sunset on the sea.
Precautions
Civitavecchia is very safe with lots of pedestrian areas. Watch out for motorscooters and buses when crossing streets.
