About the Tour

Take a relaxing walk through the hidden corners of Civitavecchia, far from big city confusion. Explore the narrow streets and squares of the historic center, amongst the diverse layers of architecture: Roman, Renaissance and modern. Visit the fish and farmers' markets and stroll along the seaside promenades to enjoy the pace and peace of Italian lifestyle. The historic center hides many artistic treasures in churches and private homes.

Tour Producer

American-Irish writer and historian Mary Jane Cryan has been living in Italy since 1965 working in the fields of international education, journalism and tourism. A Vatican guide during Holy Year 1975, she has also worked with Elderhostel and set up study abroad programs for American universities in Rome and Viterbo. Her byline has appeared in academic journals, guidebooks and magazines in Italian and English and during a four year hiatus in the USSR she was on the staff of Moscow Magazine.

When not busy writing about central Italy in her restored historic palazzo nestled between Rome and Civitavecchia, she can be found sailing the Mediterranean bringing history to life as enrichment and destination speaker on luxury cruise ships (especially Azamara).

For more about her published books, ebooks, insider tips and historic connections discovered over many decades you can subscribe for free to her online magazine "The Painted Palazzo" on substack.com.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

Raphael house (open 3-5 pm or by appointment ), Archeology Museum, historic churches, Corso Centocelle and Corso Marconi shopping areas, public markets. For best pizza-Mastro Titta, best gelato-Chalet del PIncio. My favorite restaurants are Da Baffone, Corso Garibaldi for al fresco dining , and Bistro at Hotel San Giorgio in the evening. Locals favorites include Trinity Pub on Via Trieste , Holo's vegan cafe, Via Istria. For beaches -Locals go to rocky San Agostino, a short taxi ride away, or Santa Severa, a 10 minute train ride south towards Rome, with sandy beaches and a castle .

Best time of day

Mornings are best for shops, museums, churches and markets are open. In summer, avoid the hottest midday hours and don't miss the spectacular sunset on the sea.

Precautions

Civitavecchia is very safe with lots of pedestrian areas. Watch out for motorscooters and buses when crossing streets.

“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
