About the Tour

Take a stroll through the streets of Caerphilly and the park surrounding the castle while hearing stories about the town’s history and legends.

The tour starts at the Visit Caerphilly Centre. From there, you’ll walk up to the Tommy Cooper statue where you’ll learn more about the famous comedian and to the Twyn Community Centre. You’ll then stroll through the town and riverside park, all the while hearing stories about the town’s development through the ages. I’ll then take you to the site of a Roman Fort with a view of the often overlooked western side of the castle.

On the way back through the park and to the castle, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to sit and listen to some of the amazing stories, legends and history connected to the castle. The tour ends at the gates of the castle with one final story about one of the most influential people of the Victorian age.

I'm an actor, storyteller, and unicorn collector. I'm also passionate about history in general and about Welsh history in particular. Wales is my homeland and I am very proud to call myself "Cymraes" - a Welsh woman.
Growing up I didn't realise how unusual it was to have a medieval castle as your playground but its strories always fascinated me. The more I learnt about the castle the more Iearnt about local history and the more I wanted people to see the amazing place I live in as I do. A place of mystery, rebellion, heartbreak and madness all linked to a town with a history going back 2000 years.
My tours will take you on a walk through that history, not only in Caerphilly town but in the surrounding valleys too.
Thanks to Voicemap you can join me on a socially distanced tour while I tell you stories of my homeland.

How VoiceMap Works

Focus on your surroundings, not the screen

VoiceMap’s audio tour app uses GPS to play audio automatically, at the right time and place. Just install it, then download your tour and go to the starting point to begin your walk, drive, cycle, train trip or even boat ride.

Follow a route with turn-by-turn-directions

Tours follow a route from a fixed starting point. This is how we provide turn-by-turn directions. It also helps publishers tell a story greater than the sum of its parts. But you can use Resume to pick up a tour from the closest location whenever you like.

Listen as many times as you like

You can listen to your tours as often as you like using both the VoiceMap app and the VoiceMap website. Your access to tours doesn’t expire.

Take virtual tours anywhere

Just select Virtual mode in the VoiceMap app to listen to tours at home – or anywhere else. You’ll see the option after you download the tour. You can also listen to the whole tour here on the website.

Buy for less on voicemap.me and sync

Once you’ve purchased a tour, it’s added to your VoiceMap library. If you sign into the app using the same method you used on the website, you’ll have access to your full library of tours in both places.

Use VoiceMap offline

The VoiceMap app works entirely offline if there’s no data connection, so you don’t have to pay roaming fees. Just download the tour over WiFi before you get started.

Directions to Starting Point

The tour starts outside the main entrance to the Visit Caerphilly Centre. There is a car park immediately opposite. The shopping centre car park is across the road, the entrance is off Bedwas Road by the Morrisons petrol station.
If you are arriving by train or bus just follow the signs, walk downhill towards the castle. The Visit Caerphilly Centre (Coffi Vista) is situated above the cenotaph, in the middle of the one-way system and opposite the main entrance to the castle. It's not as difficult to find as it sounds!
