Knights, Pilgrims, and Cathedrals: The Ancient Heart of Burgos
About the Tour
Echoes of medieval knights, Spanish royalty, and countless pilgrims reverberate across Burgos, where three UNESCO World Heritage sites converge. On this walking tour, you’ll find out how this Castilian stronghold shaped Spanish history while serving as a crucial stop on the Camino pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
The tour starts at the stone Arch of Santa María, one of only two surviving medieval gates. You’ll trace a circular route through medieval squares, along tree-lined promenades, and up to castle viewpoints. Along the way, you’ll discover why blood sausage defines local cuisine, how a constable’s widow became one of Europe’s most powerful women, and why Franco chose this city to declare the Spanish Civil War’s end.
I’ll show you why Burgos is more than just another tourist stop. It’s where Spanish identity was forged through royal decrees, religious devotion, and international trade, and legends like Columbus, El Cid, and the Catholic Monarchs left their mark. The tour ends back at the magnificent Gothic Burgos Cathedral, the city’s towering temple that took centuries to complete.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- Explore El Espolón promenade where royal statues originally destined for Madrid’s palace now grace tree-lined walkways that prevent flooding from the Arlanzón River
- Visit the House of the Cord where Columbus met the Catholic Monarchs after his second voyage, and where the 1512 Laws of Burgos became history’s first declaration of rights
- Discover Plaza Llana de Adentro, the medieval ”flat square” where shoe merchants traded under ancient arcades and powerful abbesses controlled wheat prices across 50 villages
- Walk through the former Jewish quarter where rabbis became bishops after the city’s 1492 expulsion
- Experience the pilgrims’ route along streets where medieval travelers found shelter, following the same path that prisoners walked as penance for their crimes
- Marvel at Burgos Cathedral’s soaring 74-meter towers and intricate Gothic façade, learning why UNESCO refused modern door designs to preserve its 800-year heritage
On this 90-minute walking tour, you’ll stroll where Spanish wool became Flemish tapestries, where royal marriages shaped European politics, and where pilgrims still pause on their ancient journey to the world’s end.

Salamanca Visit
Hello, my name is Martoke Witlox and since 2012 working as a guide in Salamanca and surroundings with lots of enthusiasm. Born in the Netherlands but since1992 living in Salamanca. I came to Salamanca for a Spanish language course, and yes I met someone who is now my husband.
I have permission from the Junta de Castilla y León to work in this beautiful environment. My studies are tourism and my passion is history. This makes it really enjoyable to work in this area. My motto is: “A tour without anecdotes and humor is not a tour”. Fortunately, this region provides for all this and more.
Salamanca is a beautiful city with so much history, tales, legends, anecdotes, good food and atmosphere. What more do you want? I feel privileged to be a guide here. But happily not only Salamanca. Burgos is another gem in this no so known heart of Spain region.
Come to know the heart of Spain with me.
