Run the South Brisbane Reach: A Guide to its Heritage and Development
About the Tour
Brisbane – or Meanjin – has seen 200 years of transformation. Once an Indigenous hunting and meeting place, it became a penal colony for British convicts, a European settlement and, later, a vibrant cultural precinct in what is Australia’s third largest city today. On this running tour, you’ll discover the city’s remarkable history while following a safe, winding and scenic route.
Starting in ANZAC Square at the Boer War Horseman memorial, you’ll make your way up the famous pedestrian staircase, Jacob’s Ladder. You’ll run through the Roma Street Parklands, once the city’s busiest rail yard and now home to the world’s largest urban subtropical garden. The route crosses the river twice via distinctive pedestrian bridges.
Along the way, I’ll point out sites tied to Brisbane’s colonial past, including the Ship Inn and the Commissariat Store Museum, built by convicts under the notorious Captain Logan. As you loop through the City Botanic Gardens, you’ll find out how floods have repeatedly shaped the city’s development. The tour ends at Brisbane City Hall in King George Square.
During this 75-minute running tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Circle the Old Windmill, one of only two remaining convict-built structures in Brisbane and the site of Queensland’s first executions
- Experience the world’s largest urban subtropical garden at Roma Street Parklands
- Cross the Kurilpa Bridge, the world’s largest hybrid tensegrity bridge with its distinctive maritime design
- Visit the site where the 1896 Pearl Ferry disaster occurred, claiming 40 lives
- Learn about the iconic woman whose name is attributed to 17 Queensland landmarks
- Discover the story behind the delicious Lamington cake at Old Government House
- Find the hidden “fairy door” in Burnett Lane, marking the yard where Captain Logan’s notorious convict punishments occurred
- Follow the Arbour Walk through South Bank, where bougainvillea vines create a stunning natural canopy
By the end of this tour, you’ll have gained local insight into Brisbane’s complex history while getting a great workout along one of the city’s most scenic running routes.

ReRunMe
Your guide is ReRunMe owner and operator Michael Jackson — a well-travelled educator and masters distance runner from Queensland. He has worked in primary education across Queensland, in hospital-based rehabilitation physiotherapy in northern Colorado, and now in disability advocacy as a clinical educator across Australia.
Michael has a long-standing love of exploring cities on foot. In 2018–2019, he travelled to 25 countries with his family, taking in countless places and guided tours along the way. Back in 2001, he solo-cycled the lower half of Australia’s Bicentennial National Trail from Melbourne to Brisbane. Whenever he spends a few days in a new or old city, he heads out for a run or two - to explore and to develop a sense of what makes that city unique.
He’d love to show you around Brisbane — sharing the stories, character and hidden details that make this city his home. Pack your running shoes and let’s tour!

Best time of day

Precautions
On public safety indexes Brisbane is similar to Sydney, Wellington, Shanghai, Osaka, Pune, Oslo, Calgary, and Munich.
Important Local Safety Information:
a) STOP and USE the designated road crossings on the tour. These crossings have dashed while lines on the road, crossing signs and traffic signals. Push the circular crossing buttons on the posts, then wait for the green person symbol and rapid clicking sound, before WALKING across the road.
b) KEEPING to the LEFT is the rule for pedestrians on paths and vehicles on roads in Australia.
c) OTHER USERS of the tour path must be considered - maintain a smooth constant path and avoid quick changes in direction. Consider that there are other pedestrians, runners, cyclists, and scooter users on these public paths. Gesturing your intended path to others can also be helpful.
d) The VOLUME of the AUDIO should be at a level where you can still hear ambient noise (i.e. deactivate noise cancelling on your headphones). You might also wear only one earbud or earphone as you do the tour. This will allow you to hear what is going on around you, react to other path users.
e) HYDRATE your body in the hours before starting this tour - local heat and humidity in any season can easily cause dehydration. About 8 drinking water fountains are found along this route.
