Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art, universally known as GOMA, opened in 2006 and quickly became the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art in Australia. Its architecture has a story of its own. The building was oriented not to the South Bank grid but towards Tank Street and the Old Windmill. Even then, the final angle was adjusted slightly following consultation with the Turrbal people, whose concerns about the windmill's history shaped the design.
Inside, GOMA has a habit of making headlines. One exhibition featured a goldfish in a blender (switched off, mercifully). Another involved volunteers wandering the galleries as part of a live artwork, entirely undressed. It made international news.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours use GOMA to anchor Brisbane's South Bank story, connecting its bold architecture to Turrbal history and the cultural precinct that grew from a former industrial riverbank.
