About the Tour

Behind Bibury’s picturesque stone cottages are hidden histories and fascinating tales waiting to be told. On this walking tour through the village’s ancient streets, you’ll find traces of the Celtic tribes, Roman settlers, medieval weavers, and even Japanese royalty who have left their mark.

Starting and ending in the car park near Bibury Trout Farm, you’ll make your way through the village. You’ll wander past iconic landmarks like Arlington Row – the weavers’ cottages from the 1300s that Henry Ford tried (and failed) to relocate to America. You’ll see St Mary’s Church with its Norman architecture and mysterious sundials, and learn why Emperor Hirohito called his visit to this village “one of the happiest periods” of his life.

Along the way, you’ll hear stories passed down through generations. You’ll also have an opportunity to see private historic properties like the Bibury Roman Villa and the Bibury Court gates, where you’ll gain insight into how this Cotswolds village evolved from an ancient Celtic settlement to a modern-day filming location for Stardust and Bridget Jones’ Diary.

Highlights include:

  • Walking across the footbridge over the crystal-clear River Coln where the famous Boxing Day duck race attracts worldwide viewers
  • Standing before Arlington Row, the first example of terraced housing in England which is featured in British passports
  • Learning about the Roman villa discovered in 1880, complete with mosaics and hypocaust heating systems
  • Visiting the site where Shakespeare stayed in 1592 and went hawking with local gamekeeper Bill Peregrine
  • Discover the Catherine Wheel pub, built in the 1400s using timber beams from old sailing ships
  • Hear tales of Celtic goddess Cuda and the peaceful Dobunni tribe who first settled this valley

This hour-long walking tour covers just over a mile through the village center, making it suitable for most fitness levels.

Step into England’s most photographed village and uncover the remarkable stories that make Bibury far more than just a pretty face.

Piers Powis has grown up in the surrounding area of Bibury and is proud to call the Cotswolds his home. As a self confessed countryman, Piers has had a deep connection with this land through farming and countryside pursuits. As a gamekeeper in his 20's he stewarded some of England's finest lands.
Piers is a keen rambler and can often be found strolling the hills, fields and footpaths of his home county. He has a deep love and respect for nature combined with a passion for history and maintaining traditions. This comes across in his tours, especially if you are lucky enough to get a spot on one of his live excursions.

In early 2025, Piers noticed the influx of visitors into the already popular area and felt compelled to connect with these people in order to share in the history engrained into Bibury's beauty.

Best time of day

To get the most from the Beautiful Bibury Voicemap tour, starting between 9AM to 3PM will grant you access to the Bibury Trout Farm and St Marys church. Allow around an hour for the Beautiful Bibury Voicemap tour bearing in mind the Bibury Trout Farm closes at 5pm.

April to September will usually allow for the best weather in Bibury. In April the cherry blossoms are in full bloom making the landscape serene and idyllic with colourful explosions of pink and white. Into May and through to August the foliage is now thicker upon the trees and Bibury is green and lush. By September and October the leaves start to turn and become a patchwork of autumnal palettes.

For the most beautiful Bibury experience, the Author recommends an early morning or sunset stroll. You will not be able to access the attractions of Bibury like St Marys Church or Bibury Trout Farm but you will miss the crowds and enjoy Bibury in its most tranquil and placid times.

The Bibury audio walking tour can be enjoyed year-round, offering something unique in every season. Spring and summer are particularly popular, when the village blooms with vibrant flowers and the River Coln sparkles in the sunshine—perfect for photographs and a leisurely stroll. These warmer months provide ideal conditions for walking, with longer daylight hours and plenty of opportunities to enjoy a picnic or visit the nearby pubs and tearooms.

Autumn brings a rich palette of golden colours to the Cotswold landscape, making it a quieter and more atmospheric time to explore Bibury without the larger summer crowds. Winter has its own charm too: the frosty mornings and misty views lend a magical stillness to the village, though be sure to dress warmly and check weather conditions before setting out.

We recommend starting the tour during daylight hours to fully appreciate the historic sights and natural beauty along the route. Paths can be uneven in places, so comfortable footwear is advised, especially after rain. Bibury remains a safe and accessible destination in all seasons, but weekdays and early mornings typically offer a more peaceful experience, especially during peak tourist months.

Precautions

Bibury is growing in popularity with visitors. Getting to Bibury early will allow for easier parking. Be careful when driving the narrow lanes around the area as they can quickly become blocked with tourist traffic. I recommend parking at the Bibury Trout Farm if the central parking in Bibury is full. Please avoid parking on the side of the smaller roads around Bibury as this can cause turmoil for locals that still need to move through the area. The main road through Bibury is still a main highway so keep pedestrian movement off the roads as much as possible to allow traffic to flow.

Respect the local wildlife of Bibury by keeping to the footpaths and not entering the rivers and streams.

Respect the local residents of Bibury by appreciating private property boundaries.

Alleviate the strain on local resources and take all of your rubbish home with you.

Public toilets can be found along the main road through Bibury opposite the Arlington Row footbridge.

To ensure a safe and comfortable experience on the Bibury audio walking tour, a few simple precautions will go a long way. While the route is suitable for most fitness levels, there are some uneven surfaces, and mild inclines. We strongly recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable footwear with good grip—especially after rain when some areas can become slippery or muddy.

The tour is outdoors and exposed to the elements, so it’s wise to check the weather forecast before your visit. On sunny days, bring sunblock, a hat, and sunglasses, as there’s limited shade along the route. In cooler or unpredictable weather, a light waterproof jacket or umbrella is useful.

Stay hydrated—particularly in the warmer months—by carrying a bottle of water, and consider bringing a snack if you plan to linger at any of the beautiful viewing spots or historic locations. A fully charged phone or device with the tour downloaded in advance will ensure uninterrupted listening, especially in areas with weaker mobile signal.

Lastly, always take care when crossing roads, and be mindful of local traffic and farm vehicles on narrow lanes. Bibury is a working village as well as a popular tourist destination, so respectful and mindful exploration helps preserve its charm for everyone.
