The East Side Gallery Self-Guided Tour: The Berlin Wall as a Canvas
About the Tour
Berlin's East Side Gallery is the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall – and one of the most politically charged outdoor galleries in the world. On this walking tour, you'll trace how a Cold War border became a canvas for collective memory, and ask what that memory still means today.
The tour starts at Ostbahnhof, once the main railway station serving East Berlin. From here, you'll walk south along Mühlenstraße toward the River Spree, moving through the story of how the Wall was built on the night of 13th August 1961, how 28 years of division shaped daily life on both sides, and how a single bungled press conference on 9th November 1989 brought it all crashing down. You'll also hear why this particular stretch of Wall looks different from all the others – and why that made it the perfect canvas.
Along the way, you'll stop beside the River Spree to hear the story of Cengaver Katranci, an eight-year-old boy who drowned in 1972 while West Berlin emergency services watched helplessly from the other bank. You'll also learn the secret meaning of bananas in the Cold War, and why the paintings you see today are not quite what artists created in 1990. The tour ends at a quiet memorial stone near the Oberbaumbrücke for Udo Düllick, a 25-year-old engineer who tried to swim across the Spree just weeks after the Wall went up, and for years was known only as The Unknown Fugitive.
On this 45-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Stand on the former
death strip
beside the Spree and understand how a river became a lethal border - Examine Dmitri Vrubel's famous mural of Erich Honecker and Leonid Brezhnev in a
Fraternal Kiss
- Learn why the Wall's eastern face along Mühlenstraße was unusually well finished – and what that reveals about Cold War propaganda
- Cross the Oberbaumbrücke, a fairytale-looking bridge that served as a controlled border checkpoint for nearly three decades
- Discover Thorsten Goldberg's Rock, Paper, Scissors installation, and what a children's game says about political decision-making
- Explore the complex question of what authenticity means when restored murals replace the originals
This tour goes beyond just explaining the Wall and asks you to sit with the questions it still raises. By the time you reach the memorial stone at the end, you'll be thinking about borders well beyond Berlin.
