About the Tour

Bergen is the gateway to Norway’s breathtaking fjords. It’s also home to Bryggen, the distinctive harbor district with its maze of medieval wooden buildings, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On this walking tour, I’ll show you that the city’s allure extends far beyond these highlights. You’ll follow an unconventional itinerary featuring off-the-beaten-path destinations, and pausing to take in stunning panorama and unique vantage points.

Our tour starts at Bergen Harbor, a picturesque quay, and the ideal spot to capture memorable photos of Bryggen Harbor, across the bay. As you walk through one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, you’ll hear the tale of a tremendous ship explosion in 1944. You’ll pass charming old wooden houses and make your way through the lively fish market en route to significant landmarks including the Meat Market of Bergen (Kjøttbasaren). At the old Bergen Stock Exchange, you’ll find gorgeous frescoes of Bergen’s commercial and maritime history.

On this tour of Bergen, you’ll also have the chance to:

  • Find out what the Nordnes Republic is
  • Explore one of the most photographed streets in the city, Knøsesmauet, with its charming wooden houses, each uniquely decorated
  • Learn about the Buekorps battalions, marching neighborhood youth organizations with roots in the 1800s
  • Admire the statue of a swan over the pharmacy’s entrance in the city center, Apotek 1 Svanen Bergen
  • Soak up the atmosphere in the Bergen Harbor Market’s designated graffiti area
  • Enjoy one of the most breathtaking views of Bergen and its main bay from Bergen Harbor’s Bryggen Harbour viewpoint

The tour ends on the Mirador Skansen Bataljon, on the base of Mount Fløyen, where the breathtaking views will leave you speechless.

This tour is ideal for those intrigued by lesser-known historical facts about Bergen and seeking out uncommon spots, all enjoyed at a leisurely pace. For a more comprehensive grasp of the city’s rich historical and artistic heritage, I recommend combining this tour with my two other offerings: the Pocket Bergen walking tour and the Bryggen walk.

Don’t wait any longer then! Let me guide you through this wonderful city.
