Introducing our Bergen tours
Bergen wears its nicknames lightly. The Gateway to the Fjords, the City of the Seven Mountains – the city has heard them all and carries on regardless, rain-soaked and rather pleased with itself. Visitors arrive for the fjords and usually spend a whirlwind afternoon at the fish market and Bryggen's colourful wooden warehouses before the cruise ship calls them back.
But Bergen is older and stranger than that itinerary suggests. Its medieval harbour was the commercial nerve centre of Scandinavia for centuries, controlled by the Hanseatic League – German merchants who ran the stockfish trade and left behind a warren of warehouses that burned down and were rebuilt each time, stubborn as the city itself. Grieg practised here. Ibsen brooded here. And somewhere in the city's records, Anne Pedersdotter, wife of a prominent priest, was condemned to burn as a witch on 7 April 1590.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours follow the full sweep of that story – Bryggen's Hansa Quarter, the quiet lanes of Sandviken, the hike up Mount Fløyen.
Plug in your earbuds and let the rain begin.
