Highlights of Aveiro: A Walking Tour of Portugal’s Art Nouveau Capital
About the Tour
Often nicknamed the ”Venice of Portugal,” Aveiro is a distinctive coastal destination that captivates visitors. On this walking tour, you’ll find out how its salt ponds, elaborately painted Moliceiro boats, secret-recipe sweets, and world-famous porcelain give the city its unique flavour!
This tour starts at the famous steps near Hotel Meliá Ria, known as Escadaria ”I love Aveiro”. You’ll wander through streets lined with ceramic-decorated buildings and lively squares like Praça do Marquês de Pombal and Praça da Repúblic. As you walk, you’ll hear about Aveiro’s evolution from a salt-producing town to the creative university city it is today.
I’ll point out the different architectural styles and show you the city’s vibrant street art scene while you explore main streets like Avenida Doutor Lourenço Peixinho and Rua João Mendonça. I’ll also share secrets about Aveiro’s lagoon (Ria de Aveiro) and Ecomuseu Marinha da Troncalhada, the ecomuseum where you can learn about the production of white gold: Salt!
The tour concludes at the serene Infante Dom Pedro City Park where you can relax by the duck lake and maybe even enjoy a picnic. Along the way, you’ll be able to:
- Cross Ponte dos Laços de Amizade (Laces of Friendship Bridge), adorned with thousands of colourful ribbons
- Discover the tradition of changing the Moliceiro boats’ decorative panels to reflect current events and social commentary
- Sample the city’s famous Ovos Moles de Aveiro, traditional sweets created by nuns using leftover egg yolks, and other specialities like Tripas (similar to French crêpes) and Bolacha Americana at local establishments
- Visit Museu de Arte Nova (the Museum of Art Nouveau) and see intricate stonework with flower and animal motifs
- See Estátua Metal ”O Salineiro”, a statue that represents the men and women who worked in Aveiro’s once-thriving salt production industry
- Explore Capela de São Gonçalinho, the chapel where locals celebrate their patron saint by throwing cavacas (sweet bread rolls) from the roof during January festivities
- Admire the main cathedral, Sé Catedral de Aveiro, and learn about Princess Joana, the city’s patron saint
- Visit Portugal’s biggest and oldest porcelain factory, Loja Vista Alegre Aveiro
If you appreciate architecture and art, this is a lovely city to get to know well.
Join this easy – and flat – two-hour walk and discover why locals proudly say ”I Love Aveiro” as you discover the city’s rich history, vibrant culture, and unique charm.

GO! Walks Portugal
Hi! My name is Sara Cruz, and I live in Coimbra, a charming city in central Portugal that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.
I hold a degree in Tourism, Leisure and Heritage from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Coimbra, the oldest university in Portugal, founded in 1290. I also completed a postgraduate degree in Musicology, specializing in Portuguese guitar, with a particular focus on its morphology and soundscapes.
In 2012, I founded GO! Walks Portugal with the aim of sharing the rich cultural heritage of my city and region. I began by creating themed walking tours in Coimbra, and by 2015, I had expanded to other parts of the country - especially across Central Portugal, home to some of my favorite monuments and many off-the-beaten-path villages that remain untouched by mass tourism and preserve some of the most important cultural legacies of Portugal.
I speak Portuguese, English, and Spanish fluently, and I truly enjoy welcoming people and showing them the very best my country has to offer. Organizing unique cultural experiences is a big part of why I started working with tourism, and creating these audio tours has been a wonderful challenge that I embraced with heart and soul. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I do!

Directions to Starting Point
The tour starts at the steps "I Love Aveiro", R. Gustavo Silva, 3810-164 Aveiro
If you come by train and bring luggage with you, there are lockers for rent at the station, where you can keep your luggage safe while you walk around town! I suggest that you take a taxi to the starting point. When you go back to the station at the end of this tour, walk straight through Avenida Lourenço Peixinho.
If you happen to be driving, there's a free street parking lot right next to the steps. There's also an underground paid parking at FORUM Aveiro, just a few minutes walking from the starting point. Make sure not to leave luggage on the trunk of the vehicle: Aveiro is a very nice town, but it's always best to play safe :)
Tips
Places to stop along the way
There are many restaurants and pastry shops along the way. I'll recommend my favourite ones during this audio-tour!
Best time of day
All day long, all year round! If it's a sunny day, the better!
Precautions
Aveiro is a very safe town but don't make things easy for pickpocketing and keep your wallet safe at all times. You also may want to leave your luggage hidden away in the trunk of your vehicle, in case you came here by car. If you arrived by train, leave your luggage in one of the lockets for rent at the train station.
