Vibrant Amsterdam East: A Story of Urban Revival Beyond the Canals
About the Tour
Amsterdam East rewrites the story of what a Dutch neighborhood can be. On this walking tour, you'll trace the area's transformation from a struggling industrial district into one of the city's most dynamic residential communities. You'll also learn how waves of immigration, urban activism, and ambitious redevelopment shaped the streets you're walking through today.
The tour starts in Oosterpark, where the area's history begins to unfold. You'll walk through the Dapperbuurt, a neighborhood that nearly disappeared under Plan Duyff – a radical 1960s demolition scheme that residents successfully fought to stop – and along the Javastraat, the bustling main street of the Indies Neighborhood, where more than 150 nationalities converge in the space of a few blocks. Along the way, you'll pass through the former Eastern Port, once Amsterdam's industrial heartland, now reimagined as parks, residential complexes, and cultural spaces.
From the reclaimed land of the Eastern Islands, where Peter the Great once worked incognito among Dutch shipbuilders, you'll follow the old sea dike toward the Entrepotdok warehouses, built as one of Europe's earliest free-trade zones. The tour ends at the De Gooyer windmill, home to the Brouwerij 't IJ brewery – a fine place to reflect on everything you've seen.
On this 90-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Explore the World Museum, originally built in 1910 as a monument to Dutch colonial pride
- Discover the childhood home of Karel Appel, COBRA movement painter, marked by a small street artwork on the Dappermarkt
- See the Berlage Blocks on Javaplein, designed by the architect behind Amsterdam's Stock Exchange, now student housing for music academy pupils
- Visit a former public bathhouse that served the neighborhood until 1987, when barely three percent of local homes had private bathrooms
- Walk through the Funenpark, a multi-award-winning urban park built on the site of a 17th-century working port
- Spot Het Duikstertje, a tiny figurine by street artist Street Art Frankey, hidden in plain sight along the Entrepotdok canal
- Pass through the Napoleon-commissioned Oranje-Nassau Kazerne barracks, built during France's occupation of the Netherlands
This tour gives you an honest, insider look at a neighborhood still finding its shape – and the communities who made it what it is today.

Bart
Hi there! My name is Bart, and I’ve been living in Amsterdam for almost twenty years. Over that time, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the city. Not just for its famous canals and landmarks, but for the many small details that most people walk past without noticing.
I’ve always had a love for history and a curiosity about why places look the way they do today. Amsterdam is full of stories hidden in plain sight: in its streets, buildings, bridges, and even the layout of its neighborhoods. What fascinates me most is how the past continues to shape the city we see today.
In my tours, I like to connect those dots. Along the way, I’ll point out the overlooked details, share the stories behind them, and explain how history, geography, and everyday people have shaped this part of Amsterdam.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or think you already know the city well, I hope this tour helps you see Amsterdam from a new perspective.

If you’re driving, two convenient parking garages, My Way and Oosterparking, are located just a short walk from the starting point.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you’re in the mood for a sit-down meal after the tour, two fantastic options are Café Dapper (+31 20 2805596) and Bar Botanique (+31 20 3586553), both of which you will pass during the tour. You will get more recommendations during the tour.
Good to know: Many restaurants in this area are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but Bar Botanique is open every day. For weekend evenings, we recommend making a reservation to secure your spot.
Best time of day
This walking tour is available year-round, and best explored during the daylight hours.
For the full experience, we recommend joining us Monday through Saturday and starting before 16:00. This way, you’ll get to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the bustling Dappermarket, which is open and at its best during these hours.
It is discouraged to do the tour outside daylight hours, as the starting point in Oosterpark can be less safe after dark.
Precautions
- Explore mindfully: Amsterdam East is a vibrant, authentic neighborhood. Like many urban areas, you may occasionally encounter locals who are intoxicated or asking for spare change, so stay aware of your surroundings as you take it all in.
- Watch for bikes: Cyclists move quickly and don't always stop, even if you have right of way. Keep an eye out and use designated pedestrian paths.
- Historic terrain: The city’s charming cobblestones and stairs can be uneven, and you may encounter roadworks. Wear comfortable shoes and always follow local traffic instructions.
- Be weather-ready: Amsterdam’s weather can change fast, so check the forecast and bring a light jacket or umbrella just in case.
