About the Tour

Ever wondered what makes Amsterdam‘s food culture so unique? Or how historical trade routes influenced what‘s on the menu today?

On this mouthwatering walking tour through Amsterdam‘s diverse culinary scene, Context Travel expert Jurgen Morel will answer all these questions, and more. As an experienced international restaurant manager with a deep passion for food, he‘ll guide you through neighborhood markets, trendy eateries, and hidden spots known only to the locals.

Starting in the lively and historically rich square, Rembrandtplein, you‘ll set out on a culinary adventure filled with flavors, stories and surprises. As you walk, you‘ll take in the city‘s iconic canals, many of which are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. You‘ll wander through several charming neighborhoods, en route to the buzzing De Pijp district.

Jurgen will share the history behind the city‘s vibrant food scene and the global influences that have shaped Dutch cuisine. Along the way, you‘ll stop to admire the breathtaking architecture of the Rijksmuseum, DNB (the Dutch National Bank), and Amsterdam‘s Carrousel Pannenkoeken, a carousel turned pancake house. The tour ends in front of Heineken Experience, a former brewery where you can learn about its history and enjoy a refreshing drink.

On this 75-minute walk, you‘ll also have a chance to:

  • Explore the city‘s famous Albert Cuyp Market, where you can pop into Ranchi Amsterdam for Japanese-style sandwiches, deliciously sweet Rudis Original Stroopwafels, and De Peperbol spice store
  • Visit Amstelveld, a peaceful square with a historic wooden church and a lively atmosphere
  • Stop by Slagerij De Leeuw Traiteur and Delicatessen, a renowned butcher shop, famous for its high-quality meats and charcuterie
  • Sample international cuisine like Italian ice cream at Casa Infante, French bistro fare at Petit Caron, Spanish sandwiches at Pacomer Caterer, and authentic Lebanese food at Sajeria Utrechtsestraat
  • Experience fantastic Dutch cheese at ‘t Kaasboertje or a variety of local pastries at Patisserie Holtkamp
  • Pass the André Hazes Monument, a tribute to the beloved Dutch singer whose music still echoes through Amsterdam‘s bars
  • Step into Tjin‘s Toko, a popular store with a mix of flavors and specialty ingredients from Suriname, Indonesia, and beyond
  • Relax with a hot drink at Concerto Koffie or Café Eddy Bar, both excellent options to enjoy quality coffee and Amsterdam‘s great vibe

By the end of this tour, you‘ll have not only tasted incredible dishes but also gained insight into the cultural and historical influences that shaped Dutch cuisine. Whether you‘re a foodie, a history lover or simply looking for a great way to experience Amsterdam, this tour promises to be an unforgettable adventure.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

During our walk, there are plenty of great spots to pause and soak in the city. Amstelveld offers a peaceful square with a charming wooden church and a cozy café. The Rijksmuseum, with its stunning architecture and gardens, is worth a stop even if you don’t go inside. Museumplein, the vibrant museum district, is a great place to take in the atmosphere. And if you’re a beer lover, the Heineken Experience is perfect for a visit right after the tour.

Best time of day

This walk can be done every day except Sunday, as the Albert Cuyp Market is closed then. De Pijp is great at night too, it’s the perfect spot to return for drinks or dinner after the tour.

Precautions

Please bring a pair of headphones, your appetite and a water bottle. Don't forget to keep an eye on your belongings. And since we're in The Netherlands, don't leave home without an umbrella for an occasional rain shower.
