I'm Susam and I'll be taking you on a fun walk through the Pijp area, an area in the south of Amsterdam. This area is very popular and the houses are highly sought after, even if they are relatively small and pricy. You can find a lot of nice shops, cute coffee places and good bars and restaurants in the Pijp so it's great for a walking tour. I would love to take you on a nice walk to show you some of my favorite spots. Let's first start with where you are right now.

Are you ready to begin your tour with a cup of coffee in a national monument? CT Coffee & Coconuts is housed in a former cinema called Ceintuur Theater.

Look up, can you spot the name in the concrete facade?

This fascinating building was built in the style of the expressionism with art deco elements. It dates back to 1921-1922 and was built according to a design by architect W. Noorlander. The theatre closed down in 1976 and was left abandoned for years until it reopened in 2012 as a kitchen store and later a brasserie. These days you can kick back in a relaxed ambience and have a cup of coffee, breakfast, lunch, drinks or dinner. Most of their food is organic and locally sourced.

If you like, you can pause the tour to go ahead and enter this former movie theater and find a cosy spot somewhere. The building has three stories so take your pick. You can grab something to eat and or drink and we'll continue the walk as soon as you leave CT Coffee & Coconuts.

If you prefer to get going, turn so CT Coffee & Coconuts is on your right and the road on your left, and start walking.

This road, the Ceintuurbaan, was built in the 1800s to connect Nieuwer Amstel, now known as Amstelveen, with Amsterdam. At that time the area consisted of polders and meadows. A polder is a low lying piece of land enclosed by dikes. These days the Ceintuurbaan divides the popular area the Pijp into the Old Pijp and the New Pijp.
