About the Tour

Alghero’s Old Town captivates visitors with enchanting architecture that gives them a glimpse into Sardinia’s past. On this walking tour, I’ll guide you through the maze of churches that form part of the city’s historical heart. There, you’ll hear about Catalan culture, see the city’s impressive medieval walls, and its ornate, wrought-iron balconies.

Starting in Piazza Suli, next to the tower, Torre dell’Espero Real, you’ll pass some of Alghero’s most iconic Old Town landmarks, including the magnificent Cattedrale dell Immacolata Concezione (the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, or Saint Nicholas Cathedral) and Catedral de Santa Maria de l’Alguer (Santa Maria Cathedral). This impressive example of Catalan Gothic architecture is one of the most important religious buildings in Sardinia, featuring a stunning rose window, intricately carved arches, and an imposing bell tower. You’ll also see many historical palazzi, including Casa de Ferrera, Palazzo Civico, Palazzo Serra and Palazzo della Dogana. These magnificent, palatial buildings are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the area and offer a glimpse into the lives of the aristocracy who once inhabited them.

On this hour-long tour, you’ll also:

  • Stroll along part of the medieval city wall known as Bastioni Marco Polo, to the statue of Madonnina in front of Torre di Sant’Elmo
  • Discover how a local group of theatre lovers transformed a warehouse into the enchanting Teatro Civico
  • Admire the beautiful Capo Caccia cliffs, known to locals as the Sleeping Giant
  • Take in the beautiful churches of Chiesa di San Francesco, Chiesa del Carmelo, Chiesa della Misericordia and Chiesa di San Michele (Church of Saint Michael) with its famous multicoloured bell tower
  • Find out the origins of the name Alghero and the city’s close links to the sea

It’s not just the grandeur of the cathedral that makes Alghero’s Old Town so special. The winding streets and narrow alleyways are lined with colorful buildings that are home to a wide range of shops, restaurants, and cafes, giving visitors a chance to experience the vibrant energy of this lively town. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, this tour will help you discover the hidden gems and rich history of this enchanting city. I look forward to showing you all that Alghero has to offer!

Tour Producer

I’m Maryanna, a curious traveler and storyteller who believes that architecture and art history reveal the most intimate truths of a city—if we know where to look. I’m fascinated by how, in an age of globalization where places risk becoming indistinguishable, a single detail like the curve of a window or the pattern of a façade can still tell a unique local story.

My work focuses on helping people “read” cities for themselves: noticing architectural styles, recognizing the influences behind them, and understanding how each historical period literally shaped the way people saw their world. I’m especially interested in giving listeners simple, accessible tools to decode what they see around them, so that walking through a street, a town, or a single building becomes a personal act of discovery rather than a passive tour.

On this route, I’ve brought together research, local insight, and translation to make these stories easy to follow and enjoyable for international audiences. My hope is that, by the end, you’ll not only remember dates and names, but also feel more confident trusting your own eye—because once you learn what to look for, every city becomes an open book.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

As you explore Alghero, there are a variety of bars and cafes to stop by for a refreshing break. Don't miss out on Ciro, a well-known family-run cafe and cake shop that's located close to the end of the tour.

Additionally, fashion lovers should visit Antonio Marras' Atelier in Piazza Civica for a unique experience.

If you're feeling hungry, be sure to try the Panino del Milese (non-vegetarian) at Milese bar, which is located just across from the port. And for dinner, make a point of trying the spaghetti algherese (non-vegetarian) and crema catalana at Pesce d'oro for an authentic taste of Alghero cuisine.

Best time of day

You may take this tour all year round, best in the morning or late afternoon. In summer avoid the hottest hours of the day.

Precautions

While Alghero's old town is mostly car-free, it's not entirely uncommon to see the occasional vehicle moving slowly through the streets. Overall, the old town is considered a safe place to explore, although visitors should be aware that it can get quite crowded in peak season, particularly during August.

As most roads are cobbled, comfortable footwear is strongly recommended. Additionally, don't forget to protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, applying sunscreen, and staying hydrated throughout your visit.
