Union Station is proof that grandeur does not guarantee promptness. Toronto's Beaux-Arts railway terminal, all soaring colonnades and vaulted ceilings, sat essentially finished by 1921, its construction delayed only by wartime shortages and a bankrupt railway. Then officials spent six more years arguing over level crossings before a single train could pass through. When Edward, Prince of Wales, finally cut the ribbon in 1927, he pronounced, "You build your stations like we build our cathedrals."

Designed jointly by the Montreal firm Ross and Macdonald and Toronto architect John Lyle, the station is now Canada's busiest transport hub, its Great Hall funnelling over a quarter million commuters daily beneath provincial flags and GO Train boards.
