Rogers Centre began life as the SkyDome, and it is a monument to spectacular budget overruns: originally costed at about $150 million, it ballooned to roughly $570 million by the time it opened in 1989. It was worth every unplanned dollar. The dome's retractable roof, the first of its kind anywhere, still slides open on sunny afternoons to reveal blue sky and the CN Tower looming just beyond the outfield.
Above one corner perches The Audience, Michael Snow's bronze sculpture of oversized fans cheering, gesticulating, and munching popcorn, in place since opening day. Inside, the Toronto Blue Jays won back to back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993, and the building has hosted everything from concerts to Monster Truck Rallies since.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours trace how the dome's overspending became local legend, blamed by Torontonians for delaying a nearby opera house's funding by a decade.
