Església de Monti-sion de Palma
About
The Church of Monti-sion stands at the heart of Palma's old Jewish quarter, on a site loaded with layered history. The Great Synagogue of the Call once stood here. It served as the spiritual centre of a flourishing medieval Jewish community, until 1315, when it was confiscated as a collective punishment and demolished eight years later.

The Jesuits built this church in its place, beginning in 1561, and inscribed the reminder above the entrance: "God loves the Gates of Zion." The Renaissance façade, sober and precisely balanced, is unlike almost anything else in Palma's largely Gothic and Baroque skyline.

Inside, there is a sculpture of the Archangel Michael defeating the demon which was widely read as a symbol of Christianity's triumph over Judaism. The conversos who studied at the Jesuit college here understood the message.
On the wall beside the church, a faint outline may mark the old synagogue door, still oriented east towards Jerusalem.

VoiceMap's tours trace this palimpsest of faith across Palma's Jewish quarter, connecting the synagogue, the church, and the Chueta families who quietly returned to touch these stones for centuries.
