For 84 years, the Complejo Cultural de Los Pinos was the private residence of Mexico's presidents, hidden inside Chapultepec Park. It was originally called Rancho La Hormiga, Ant Ranch, until President Lázaro Cárdenas decided an insect's name was beneath the dignity of the office and renamed it Los Pinos, after the orchard in Michoacán where he had fallen in love with his wife.
Thirteen presidents lived here. One preferred his own house. At 56 hectares, Los Pinos is fourteen times larger than the White House, a fact most Mexicans had no way of appreciating since the compound was entirely closed to them. In 2018, President López Obrador moved back to the National Palace and opened the gates.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours explore Los Pinos as part of Chapultepec's history, placing the former residence alongside the castle, the zoo, and the sacred Aztec hill that surrounds it.
