For over 200 years, a wall divided Heidelberg's Church of the Holy Spirit. Protestants and Catholics shared the building, with a wall built across the inside so both could hold services at the same time.
The church dates from 1398 and took its time. Its tower wasn't finished until 1544, nearly 150 years after the first stone. The wall finally came down in 1936, and today the church is Protestant.
Two of VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours of Heidelberg stop in the square around it. One starts in front of the church. The other explains why the houses nearby are baroque: the French burned the town in 1689.
