About the Tour

What makes Heidelberg so unique, and why does it exude a charm that’s distinct from other German towns? As you wander the city’s narrow streets, these answers will unfold in its Old Town‘s storied passageways. You‘ll learn about the French troops who once reduced Heidelberg to ashes, only for the city to be reborn as an architectural wonderland.

Starting at Marktplatz, you‘ll make your way through Heidelberg, seeing its baroque architectural features spring to life amongst hidden remnants of the former medieval city. Our walk leads us to Alte Brücke (the Old Bridge), where you‘ll enjoy a beautiful view of Heidelberg Castle. There you‘ll hear about the mystery of who was behind the Old Bridge’s explosion. At the old city gates, you‘ll encounter an intriguing bronze monkey which, legend has it, brings about different fates, depending on where you touch it. I‘ll tell you how Heidelberg was impacted by World War II and you‘ll see the poignant book-burning memorial and the site of the old Jewish synagogue. You‘ll also pass the new and old university buildings, and hear about some of their notable donors, like John D. Rockefeller and Walter Chrysler. Finally, on your way back to Marktplatz where our tour ends, you‘ll encounter numerous beautiful Madonnas adorning the street corners.

Along the way, you‘ll have a chance to:

  • Saunter along Hauptstrasse, the heart of Heidelberg‘s old town, filled with cafés and other cultural delights
  • Peer into a student union canteen in an old medieval stable just off of Marstallstrasse (Stable Street)
  • Shop at the Käthe Wohlfahrt Heidelberg, a famous German Christmas store
  • See the Heidelberg University Library, built in the city’s prominent Wilhelmian architectural style
  • Hear the astounding history of the Studentenkarzer, a dedicated student prison, created by the university when the local police force could no longer contain unruly students
  • Gaze upon the medieval Church of the Holy Spirit and hear about Heidelberg‘s role in the Holy Roman Empire
  • Find out who went to Heidelberg University, and which of them are considered good and not-so-good alumni
  • Find the Hexenturm, an old medieval witch‘s tower that was incorporated into the new university building built around it

Upon finishing this tour, you‘ll have developed a greater appreciation for the history, architecture, and legends of Heidelberg. As you‘re guided through the streets, you‘ll be passing by plenty of places to eat and drink, all listed in the Tips section below.

Hello and welcome to my audio tour page!

I'm British by birth and moved to Frankfurt too many years ago to mention. Prior to Frankfurt my main places of residence had been London and New York. It was moving around to such great cities that peaked my interest in history and exploring.

It occurred to me that it wasn't just tourists but also newcomers, who'd just relocated, that wanted to quickly orientate themselves to a new city so I set up the web page www.walk-frankfurt.com, along side a company focused on walking tours and a blog full of local information.

Including Wiesbaden, Mainz and Heidelberg to the audio tour collection was a natural progression, offering additional places of interest to those wanting to do a day trip from Frankfurt.

The Bronze Monkey

Turn right after you've passed through the towers.

As you exit the bridge look to your right to see a bronze sculpture of a monkey. Legend has it that if you touch the mirror, held in the monkeys hand, it will bring you wealth. Whereas touching the monkeys fingers means yo...

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    2km
  2. Distance back to start location
    49.26m

Directions to Starting Point

Heidelberg old town (Altstadt) is a least 20 minutes walk from the main station (Hbf) along uninteresting, busy, roads so I recommend taking public transport.
To reach the old town from Heidelberg Hbf - take bus number 32 from stand B (during peak times busses depart every 10 minutes) and alight at Universitätsplatz.
It is also possible to take an S-Bahn (S2 or S5) from the main station to Heidelberg-Altstadt, and then it is a short 5 minute walk to the audio tour starting point.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

There are lots of cafes and bars along the route of the tour and ice-cream parlours too. I have listed a few of my favourites below but a more comprehensive list can be found on my Heidelberg blog page, https://www.walk-frankfurt.com/blog/heidelberg-audio-tour, specifically updated to compliment this tour:

  • Moro Caffe & Thé (Haupstr. 160) The coffee shop in Heidelberg. Stop here for a perfectly made cappucino and a (large) piece of home made cake.

    • Vetters Alt Brauhaus - (Steingasse 9) A clasic brewery serving it’s own beers and hearty plates of German food. Open for lunch and dinner until late.
    • Cafe Burkhardt (Untere Str. 27) Originally a wine bar, Cafe Burkhardt is now the place to go for lunch or a bite to eat, especially for a choise of vegetarian food or gluten-free options.
    • Rada Coffee & Rösterei (Untere Str. 21) For a great cup of coffee this is the place to head too. Home made cakes including gluten free options, too. They also offer gluten free lunch options.

OK Kool (Marstallstr. 7) The place for some great home made ice-cream, cakes and a good cup of coffee to-go. Limited opening hours, though!

Whilst you are relaxing with a glass of wine, or coffee, take the chance to soak up more about Heidelberg via Mark Twains musings and especially his notes on the student life and the student prison at: www.mark-twain-in-heidelberg.de

Best time of day

Any time of year and any time of day is perfect for this tour. Be aware that in the summer months Heidelberg has a lot of visitors and large tour groups. At dusk or later on, Heidelbergs old town is perfectly safe. In fact, it can be fun to be out in the evening when the streets are dimmly lit, students are abound and the castle high above you, is beautifully floodlit.

Precautions

Cyclists are everywhere, so be cautious when crossing the road and make sure you are walking on pedestrian streets and not in the cycle lanes.
The streets are cobbled and can get slippery on damp days so flat shoes are essential.
Summers are hot. Bring a bottle of water with you or be prepared to pay tourist prices if you buy a bottle along the way.

“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
