The Museum of Free Derry sits in the Bogside, a neighbourhood that once declared itself independent of the British state. In August 1969, residents erected barricades after a loyalist march turned violent, painted the words "You are now entering Free Derry" on a gable wall, and held out for nearly three years. It ended on Bloody Sunday, 30 January 1972, when the Parachute Regiment killed fourteen civil rights marchers on the surrounding streets.
Established in 2006 by the Bloody Sunday Trust, the museum tells this story from the inside, through the voices of the families and Bogside residents who lived it.
VoiceMap's "Cityside, Bogside and the Walled City's West" tour guides visitors through the surrounding murals, memorials, and the iconic Free Derry Corner before arriving at the museum's entrance, tracing the arc from the Battle of the Bogside to Operation Motorman and the fragile peace that followed.
