Free Derry Corner
About
Free Derry Corner is, at first glance, just a wall. No building attached, no roof overhead, just a lone gable end standing on a roundabout in the Bogside. But that white-painted surface carries one of the most charged sentences in modern Irish history: "You Are Now Entering Free Derry."

In August 1969, following a disputed Apprentice Boys parade, Bogside residents erected barricades and declared their neighbourhood beyond the reach of the state. For nearly three years, "Free Derry" operated as a kind of ungoverned enclave. When the surrounding terrace houses were later demolished, this single wall was kept standing by the community, a deliberate act of memory.

VoiceMap's Cityside and Bogside tour places Free Derry Corner within the full sweep of the Troubles, tracing the barricades, the Battle of the Bogside, Bloody Sunday, and the murals nearby that together tell the story of a neighbourhood that refused, for a time, to be governed.
