The Derry Girls Mural covers the wall of Badger's Bar on Orchard Street and, by most measures, has become the most photographed attraction in the city. It was painted in January 2019 by a local collective called UV Artists, commissioned to mark the launch of the second series of Channel 4's Derry Girls, the comedy series written by local screenwriter Lisa McGee.
Loosely based on McGee's own adolescence in early-1990s Derry, the show follows four schoolgirls and one hapless English cousin navigating friendship, family and the final years of the Troubles. All five characters appear here in vivid detail: James, Michelle, Erin, Orla and Clare.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours point visitors to the mural from the city's historic walls above, using it to explore the relationship between the show's comedy and its serious backdrop, and to connect the geography of Nailors Row and the Bogside to the real locations where Lisa McGee grew up.
