The Periamet Mosque was built in 1838 by leather merchants. The road it stands on, Vepery High Road, is still home to a Muslim community of leather traders.
The mosque takes its name from the neighbourhood. *Periamet* means “customs” in old Tamil, because goods were taxed here before entering the British fort. Next door, Vepery was Christian ground, with churches, schools and European garden houses among paddy fields and coconut groves.
VoiceMap’s tours use the mosque to show how the neighbourhood changed hands, from those churches and garden houses to the traders who largely live here now.
