Colonial Echoes in Chennai: A Heritage Walking Tour
About the Tour
Chennai’s fascinating past comes alive through its colonial architecture and civic spaces. On this heritage tour of the city, you’ll walk through what was once the political and cultural heart of colonial Madras and hear about 200 years of history – spanning the British Raj, the independence movement, and the emergence of modern India.
This tour starts at the historic Madras Medical College, home to one of the oldest medical institutions in Asia, where you’ll stroll through the college grounds with their Victorian architecture. You’ll make your way to the area around the former People’s Park, once the green heart of colonial Madras, passing the Memorial Hall.
Along the way, you’ll discover how the city evolved from a patchwork of fishing villages into a colonial capital, learning about the British Raj’s impact on urban planning and architecture. You’ll see how the original Fort St. George expanded into “Black Town” for merchants, and how the city’s heart gradually shifted to this area around Central Station. The tour ends at Victoria Public Hall, a red-brick colonial structure built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, which now serves as both a museum and auditorium.
On this two-hour walking tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- See the massive baobab tree on the Madras Medical College grounds, a rare African species that’s stood for about 150 years
- Admire Indo-Saracenic architecture at the college’s Anatomy Block (nicknamed “Chennai’s Red Fort”) which blends Indian, Islamic, and British architectural elements
- Visit Chennai Central Railway Station, an iconic Gothic Revival building that serves half a million passengers daily
- Browse the underrated open-air second-hand book market near Moore Market
- Find the last remaining portion of what was once the grand People’s Park, My Lady’s Garden
- Marvel at the impressive neo-Palladian Ripon Building, constructed in 1911 to house the Greater Chennai Corporation, and hear about Lord Ripon, the progressive Viceroy
- Discover unique passengers’ hostels and the diversity of Indo-Victorian architecture
By the end of this tour, you’ll have a sense of Chennai’s layered colonial past, and understand how the city evolved from a collection of villages into the vibrant metropolis it is today.

Fabienne Visites
Hey — or Bonjour, as we say in my home country. I’m Fabienne, a French historian and licensed guide, currently based in Chennai, India. For the past 25 years, I’ve been traveling the world, exploring cultures and sharing their stories.
Since arriving in India four years ago, I’ve published two books, both on Amazon in English and French. The first, Tamil Letters, explores the unique cultural and historical identity of Southern India. The second is a children’s book titled Prem, the Little Bonze, created to inspire young readers. I am currently working on a third book, reflecting on how deeply this incredible country has inspired me.
Living in India has deepened my curiosity and strengthened my desire to better understand its people and history — a history I now feel, in a small way, connected to. Through my books, my blog (https://visitesfabienne.org/), and my history-focused tours, I’m always eager to share the insights and discoveries I’ve gathered along the way.
My goal is to challenge the stereotypes and misconceptions often associated with India. I aim to show how daily life here — vibrant, diverse, complex, and beautiful — can differ greatly from what many in the Western world imagine.
I love uncovering the lesser-known stories behind history. Through my audio guides and blog, I invite you to explore the places and anecdotes I cherish most across India.
