The Women’s Bridge, or *Puente de la Mujer*, opened in December 2001, at the height of Argentina’s economic crisis, and hardly anyone noticed. Today it’s probably Puerto Madero’s most iconic image.
Santiago Calatrava, who also designed New York’s Oculus, says the shape is a couple dancing tango. The leaning arm is the man, the cables are his grip, and the walkway is the woman, mid-dip. The central section rotates to let boats through.
VoiceMap’s self-guided audio tours use the bridge to explain why most streets around it carry women’s names. They also follow the line it marks towards Plaza de Mayo.
