The Georgsbrunnen in Augsburg features a bronze statue of St George, cast in 1565, showing the dragon slayer in the act that made him famous. The statue originally stood on a column at what is now Rathausplatz, at the time not yet the grand square it would become. Around 1800 it was moved here, relocated again in 1961, and returned to this spot in 1993.
Directly opposite stands the Stadmetzg, Augsburg's Butchers' Guild House, designed by Elias Holl in 1609. Holl threaded the Vorderer Lech canal through the building's basement, using the running water to keep meat cold and carry away waste. It was considered the most advanced butchery in Europe at the time.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours connect the fountain to the wider story of Elias Holl's transformation of Augsburg, tracing his Renaissance buildings across the city and explaining how a canal network shaped its architecture and daily life.
