The Vallianeio Megaron
About
The Vallianeio Megaron stands as the final building in Athens' neoclassical trilogy, completing an architectural triad that includes the Academy of Athens and the University of Athens.

Designed by architect brothers Christian and Theophil Hansen between 1864 and 1890, its grand colonnade and iconic semicircular staircases revive ancient Greek architectural forms with a baroque flourish.

The library houses one of the world's greatest collections of Greek manuscripts, with texts dating back to the 9th century, rare books and archival treasures that survived centuries of occupation and upheaval.

The building's patron, Swiss banker Jean-Gabriel Eynard, was among the philhellenes who poured money into rebuilding Greece after independence. Though the collection has outgrown this neoclassical jewel and migrated to a larger facility in northern Athens, the Vallianeio continues its guardianship of Greek heritage.

VoiceMap's audio tours trace the trilogy's construction across decades of political turmoil, explaining how King Otto's ousting delayed the project for years and how these three buildings transformed Athens from a provincial town into a modern capital worthy of its ancient past.
