The Numismatic Museum of Athens
About
The Numismatic Museum occupies Iliou Melathron, the Palace of Troy, a mansion built in 1879 for Heinrich Schliemann, the German archaeologist who unearthed ancient Troy. Architect Ernst Ziller designed the building in neoclassical style, creating a fitting home for one of archaeology's most celebrated figures.

Inside lies a collection of 600,000 objects spanning centuries of monetary history. Ancient drachmas from the 6th century BC sit alongside coins from the Roman and Byzantine eras, tracing the evolution of currency through the 5th century CE. The mansion itself tells stories beyond the coins: Schliemann named it after his most famous discovery, embedding his legacy into Athens' streetscape.

The garden offers refuge from city noise, with a cafe that hosts Thursday evening jazz concerts. VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours connect the museum to Athens' broader neoclassical heritage, revealing how Ziller and other architects transformed the young capital into a modern European city in the late 19th century.
