Zaanse Schans: A Guide to Windmills, Crafts and Charming History
About the Tour
The Netherlands’ iconic landscape of windmills and wooden houses comes to life in Zaanse Schans. On this walking tour, you’ll explore a living village where industrial heritage meets traditional craftsmanship, and find out how the Dutch harnessed wind power to become one of the world’s earliest industrial regions.
This tour starts on Klaverringdijk, the main path leading into the historic windmill area. You’ll wander past traditional green-painted wooden houses, cross charming wooden bridges, and explore working windmills that still produce paint, oil, and timber. Along the way, you’ll discover how this region’s innovations attracted visitors from around the world, including Tsar Peter the Great who came to learn shipbuilding techniques.
The tour ends at the Museum Zaanse Tijd, which houses an impressive collection of clocks from the 1600s and 1700s.
During this 45-minute tour, you’ll have the chance to:
- Visit De Kat, the only remaining working paint mill in the world, where natural pigments are still ground into vibrant colors
- Learn about the distinctive Zaan architectural style with its characteristic white trim and green wooden facades (the darker the green, the wealthier the original owner)
- Visit a clog workshop where wooden shoes are still made using centuries-old techniques, and find out why they were essential footwear for farmers and craftsmen
- Observe traditional Dutch cheesemaking techniques and sample varieties flavored with herbs, truffle, and other ingredients
- Explore Museumwinkel Albert Heijn, the first Albert Heijn store from 1887, which grew into the Netherlands’ largest supermarket chain
Step back in time and experience the craftsmanship, innovation, and charm that made the Zaan region the industrial heart of the Netherlands.

Over the years, my love for history and old crafts only grew stronger. Today, I’m excited to share that passion with others. Through my tours, I’ll take you back in time, exploring the windmills, traditions, and stories that shaped the Zaan region.
