About the Tour

Wānaka is a pristine alpine village where mountains blend into crystal-clear waters in New Zealand’s Southern Alps.

On this walking tour, you’ll discover Wānaka’s remarkable transformation from remote settlement to beloved lakeside destination. You’ll also hear about its rich Māori heritage, colonial past, and the natural geological forces that shaped this stunning landscape.

The tour begins at the Wānaka War Memorial, with its commanding view over the township and lake. From there, you’ll meander through the charming village center with its cafés and galleries, follow the spring-fed Bullock Creek, and stroll along the scenic lakefront boardwalk. Along the way, you’ll learn how the town evolved from a frontier outpost called Pembroke, and a hub for gold miners and high-country farmers, to the adventure hub it is today.

I’ll also share the stories behind beloved attractions, like Wānaka’s historic steamboat routes, and tell you about the Pūteketeke (Australasian crested grebe) that made international headlines. The tour ends in the peaceful Wānaka Station Park, once part of a vast sheep station established in the 1860s, where you can relax amongst its collection of mature exotic trees planted by early settlers.

On this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Learn about the volcanic and glacial forces that created Lake Wānaka, New Zealand’s fourth-largest lake
  • Discover the meaning behind the town’s name and its connection to traditional Māori knowledge
  • Visit the quirky Dinosaur Park playground, a beloved local institution since the 1990s
  • See the impressive flood markers that show how high the lake has risen during major floods
  • Explore the Te Ara Maumahara memory trail with its timeline of local and national history embedded in bricks
  • Photograph the world-famous ”That Wānaka Tree,” a solitary willow in the lake that became an Instagram sensation
  • Immerse yourself in Wānaka’s unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and small-town charm – an experience that will linger long after your visit.

By the end of this tour, you’ll have a sense of why this landscape continues to inspire artists, adventurers, and conservationists.

Tour Producer

Kia ora – I’m David Downs: writer, former comedian, CEO, and lifelong storyteller.

My career has zigzagged in the best possible way. I started out in comedy, writing and performing stand-up and television, learning how to find the human truth in any situation – and how to keep an audience leaning in. That instinct to connect through humour and story has shaped everything I’ve done since.

I’ve written several books, including memoir and business titles, often drawing on my own life – from building start-ups and working in technology, to facing cancer and travelling to Boston for life-saving CAR T-cell therapy. Story, for me, isn’t just entertainment. It’s how we make sense of challenge, change, and possibility.

Today, as CEO of New Zealand Story, I lead the team responsible for sharing Aotearoa’s story with the world. That means shaping how we present our country’s identity, values, creativity and innovation on the global stage. It’s nation-branding, yes – but at heart it’s still storytelling: who we are, where we’ve come from, and what we stand for.

Through my tours, talks and writing, I bring that same lens to the places around us. I’m fascinated by the layers beneath the surface – Māori history, early European settlement, hidden military stories, forgotten industries, and the quirky characters who shaped our communities.

If you walk with me – literally or through audio – you won’t just hear dates and facts. You’ll hear stories that connect past to present, and help you see Aotearoa with fresh eyes.

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    4km
  2. Distance back to start location
    2km

Directions to Starting Point

The tour starts up the only hill on the trip, at the Wānaka War memorial, on Chalmers Street. This easy climb gives a lovely view over the village and lake. I recommend you park somewhere in the village, or get someone to pick you up from the final stop, at Wānaka Station Park, on Homestead Close (parking available there).
