Waikaia’s Hidden Histories: Gold Rush Life
About the Tour
New Zealand’s Waikaia Valley has been shaped by powerful forces. First, rivers carved their way through the mountains and later, a gold rush transformed it forever.
On this walking tour, you’ll hear the remarkable story of a town that literally moved for gold, and find out about the hardy pioneers who settled here. You’ll also discover how a once-booming mining center evolved into the peaceful rural community you see today.
The tour starts at Dickson Park in the center of Waikaia, where traces of both the mining past and agricultural present converge. You’ll explore historic streets named by a surveyor from Northumberland, England, and learn how industrial gold mining operations were so valuable they prompted an entire town to relocate.
Along the way, you’ll discover the characters who shaped this valley – from Māori hunters who pursued moa beneath the watchful eye of the massive Haast’s eagle, to legendary figures like “Pie Joe” Wallis and his famous bakery. You’ll visit the still-operating garage that has served the community for seven decades, and find out how this resilient community continues to evolve. The tour ends at the remarkable Bottle House, built with 20,000 glass bottles recovered from miners’ rubbish dumps.
On this 75-minute tour, you’ll also:
- Hear the story of Switzers – the original gold rush settlement that vanished when the ground beneath it proved too valuable to leave unworked
- Get a sense of how the landscape was physically changed by massive water-powered sluicing operations
- Explore the remnants of a once-thriving industry supported by hotels, blacksmiths, and bootmakers
- Discover how the introduction of the railway transformed the valley’s economy
- Learn about sites where Chinese miners created their own communities during the gold rush
- Imagine the seasonal journeys of early Māori who hunted moa and gathered resources in the valley
- Find out how community initiatives like the pump track and mountain bike trails continue to shape modern Waikaia
Take a walk through Waikaia’s hidden histories and see this peaceful valley in an entirely new light. Beneath the surface of this tranquil farming community lies an extraordinary story of gold fever, ambition, and reinvention.

The Southern Compass
Kia ora, I’m Virginia Driver — the creator behind Southern Compass and the voice guiding you through these immersive audio tours of New Zealand’s South Island.
After travelling extensively overseas, I chose to make my home in Ōtepoti/Dunedin, drawn by its dramatic landscapes, layered history, and strong sense of place. That connection to the South Island shapes every tour I create.
My work focuses on helping independent travellers experience places more deeply. These tours go beyond navigation, blending local history, Māori heritage, wildlife knowledge, and lived experience to share the stories that give each location meaning. From rugged coastlines to remote roads, I aim to highlight both the well-known landmarks and the quieter details that are often missed when travelling at speed.
Each tour is carefully researched, scripted, and recorded by me, with routes tested on the road to ensure accurate timing and a smooth listening experience. My storytelling style is personal, informative, and grounded — designed to feel like travelling with a knowledgeable local who knows when to talk and when to let the landscape speak for itself.
These tours are an invitation to slow down, listen closely, and connect with the South Island in a way that’s thoughtful, engaging, and respectful of the places and stories you’re travelling through.
