Avenue of a Million Elephants: Heritage, Culture and Local Life
About the Tour
Laos is where history, spirituality, and natural beauty combine to create a place you may never want to leave. On this walking tour, you’ll explore Vientiane’s Avenue Lane Xang, known as the ”Avenue of a Million Elephants,” named for the powerful Lane Xang Dynasty that once ruled this region. From ancient Buddhist temples to modern monuments commemorating independence, you’ll get to know the landmarks and stories that shape the national Lao identity.
The tour begins at the Presidential Palace on Setthathirath Road, a building originally intended as a royal residence. You’ll visit Ho Phra Keo, once home to the revered Emerald Buddha, and explore Wat Sisaket, a temple with hundreds of Buddha images housed in wall niches. As you walk along the grand Avenue Lane Xang, you’ll hear about the ancient kings who unified the three kingdoms of Luang Prabang, Champasak, and Vientiane, creating centuries of stability and prosperity.
Along the way, you’ll encounter the mysterious black That Dam stupa, said to house a mythological seven-headed naga guardian, and visit the Talat Sao Morning Market where local sellers offer everything from electronics to traditional handicrafts. You’ll learn key phrases in Lao language and discover cultural customs that will enhance your visit. The tour ends at the World Peace Gong, a gift celebrating Laos’ efforts to foster peaceful relationships with neighboring countries.
During this 90-minute tour, you’ll also have a chance to:
- Learn the proper way to greet locals with ”Sabaidee” and other essential Lao phrases
- Discover the symbolism behind the lotus bud designs that appear throughout the city
- Explore the Ho Phrakeo Museum with its artifacts dating back to the Paleolithic era

Renusha Parkin
A polyglot and lover of historical fiction, intrigued by history, language, and culture, living in Laos since 2016. When we came to Laos, we stopped at every landmark and statue we saw. We had hoped we could learn something about the country that was to be our short-term home, only to discover that there was very little information available in English.
I’m the kind of person who can’t just walk past something without wondering why it’s there. If I see a statue, a building, or even a small detail, I need to know the story behind it. I ask questions, look things up, and piece together clues until it makes sense. For me, seeing isn’t enough — understanding is what really matters.
And so, to feed my curiosity, I read anything I could find and listened to many locals tell tales to uncover the stories behind the statues, temples, and landmarks of Laos, and I am happy to be able to share them with you.
(Take heart; national projects to make information more accessible are currently underway.)
