A Guide to Vejer de la Frontera’s History: The White Pearl of Andalusia
About the Tour
Vejer de la Frontera is a shining jewel among the white towns of Cadiz Province and one of Spain’s best-preserved ‘de la frontera’ (frontier) towns and villages. On this walking tour, I’ll show you the history, traditions, culinary pleasures, and some hidden locations to visit in the town that’s known as the Pearl of Andalusia.
Your tour starts at the Tourist Office in Los Remedios Park, where you’ll learn about the historical role bluefin tuna played in the local economy, and some ancient trapping techniques. From there, you’ll head to Mirador de La Cobijada, a viewpoint where you’ll hear about Jaén’s olive trees and why the Cobijada dress was outlawed at one time. You’ll go on to hear about the town’s romantic ties with Chefchaouen, a city in Morocco, after Catalina Fernandez converted to Islam in order to wed Sidi Ali Ben Rachid. Your walk concludes at La Plazuela Square, home to Tugasa Convento San Francisco, a former convent and now a hotel.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- Hear about the origins of the belltower at Iglesia Divino Salvador, the church which was built atop a mosque in the 1400s
- Understand why ancient civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans used Vejer as a fortress as far back as the Bronze Age
- Admire the architectural similarities between Vejer’s Plaza de España and its Sevillian counterpart
- Discover Vejer’s importance during the Moorish conquest and the subsequent Christian reconquest of Spain
- Pass the Casa del Mayorazgo, a lord’s residence from the 1700s, across from the Torre del Mayorazgo, now divided into private homes with central patios
- Learn how Vejer and the surrounding areas shaped Spain’s history through famous battles like Guadalete and Trafalgar
- See the cannons in Cadiz’s old streets that once protected street corners, and which are believed to have been abandoned by the French during failed conquest attempts
- Notice Castle Vejer’s many architectural influences, a testament to the peninsula’s fierce religious wars throughout the ages
This walking tour through Vejer de la Frontera lasts around 90 minutes. We’ll embrace the local culture and traditions as well as the city’s rich history. At the end of the tour, you’ll have delved into the many different influences that have shaped Vejer’s culture, architecture, and gastronomy. You’ll also see why Vejer is officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain!
Tour Producer
Hola! I'm Carlos and I live in Vejer de la Frontera, Cádiz. I founded Explore la Tierra https://explorelatierra.com/en/! I studied an MSc in Environment and have worked in the environmental field for 5 years between Canada and UK. After working and travelling outside of Spain for several years, I realised how amazing it is that many of Spain’s resources, including pork, are sustainably harvested.
When I recognised that many friends and people who I met outside Spain knew little about the varied and wonderful products and places that Spain has to offer, so I realised that I needed to design culinary tours to change this and promote my varied culture and gastronomy. Thus, I decided to do something about it by creating Explore la Tierra in Vejer de la Frontera.
Being a wine lover I studied wine courses. I earned a Level 2 certificate with Distinction from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust(WSET), a globally recognised program. My partner and I adopted a dog and named him "Monti" for Amontillado, one of my favourite type of sherries! I am also first aid certified.
I love travelling and have traveled to around 25 countries and lived in 4 continents. This has given me the ability to get to know other cultures and what people want from a tour. My aim is to provide the best possible experience for those who want to immerse themselves in the local culture. By learning more about my culture, traditions and food in Spain, specifically Vejer de la Frontera, has to offer.
