About the Tour

Malta’s capital is often called an open-air museum, with historical treasures on every corner of its compact streets.

On this walking tour, you’ll discover how the Knights of St. John transformed a barren peninsula into one of Europe’s most formidable fortress cities. You’ll also encounter magnificent palaces, baroque churches, and panoramic viewpoints that reveal the city’s strategic importance across centuries.

This tour starts at the iconic Triton Fountain just outside the city’s main gate. You’ll walk through the imposing entrance and along Republic Street, passing Renzo Piano’s striking Parliament Building. Along the way, you’ll discover the opulent St. John’s Co-Cathedral with its Caravaggio masterpiece, explore the Grand Master’s Palace where Malta’s rulers held court, and learn how the Knights shaped every aspect of the city from its defensive bastions to its hospitals. The tour ends at the Upper Barrakka Lift, one of Valletta's most iconic sites.

During this 90-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens for spectacular panoramic views over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities
  • Admire the architectural splendor of the Knights’ auberges, including the Baroque masterpiece Auberge de Castille
  • See the Victory Church, the first building constructed in Valletta after the Great Siege
  • Explore Merchant Street and discover the Italian Knights’ headquarters at Auberge d’Italie
  • Learn about the National Library and its rare collection of historical documents dating back to the Knights’ era
  • View the impressive Grand Master’s Palace, seat of power for every ruling authority in Malta’s history
  • Discover Casa Rocca Piccola, a 16th-century noble palazzo still inhabited by the same family

By the end of this tour, you’ll have immersed yourself in the living heritage of a UNESCO World Heritage city where Knights, conquerors, and defenders have left their mark on every stone and corner.

My name is Denis. I am a licensed tour guide and a Knight of Malta, and I have been working as a guide for the past seven years.
I have always been fascinated by how much history is hidden on this small island. Malta may be tiny on the map, but it stands at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, where countless civilizations have passed, leaving their marks.
My curiosity constantly drives me to research and explore deeper — not only Malta’s story, but the wider Mediterranean world that shaped it. It’s a pleasure to share what I’ve discovered during my private tours, and through these audio guides.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

We’ll pass by several important museums, where you’ll hear a short introduction so you can decide which ones you’d like to explore in more detail. If you’re planning to visit multiple museums, consider getting a Multisite Ticket — it covers entry to more than 20 museums across Malta and Gozo.
Along the route, I’ll share even more useful tips to make the most of your time in Valletta. You’ll also find plenty of charming cafés and restaurants, perfect for a quick snack or a leisurely meal whenever you feel like taking a break.

Best time of day

You can enjoy this tour at any time of day. To avoid the crowds, it’s best to start in the morning or later in the evening. If you plan to visit Valletta’s museums along the way, keep in mind that most are open between 10 am and 4 pm.

Precautions

Valletta can get busy during the high season, so avoid stopping in the middle of busy streets to keep the flow of people moving. If you’re touring in summer, don’t forget sunscreen — the Maltese sun can be quite intense.
Bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated; you can easily buy one near the starting point, where food stalls surround the Triton Fountain.
Just to the right of the fountain, you’ll also find the Tourist Information Office if you’d like more tips on exploring Malta.
