Valencian Art Nouveau: A Walk Through Eixample
About the Tour
Valencia’s Eixample district is the ultimate Art Nouveau hotspot, hiding over 50 modernist masterpieces in plain sight. Away from the touristy historic center, this elegant, bourgeois neighbourhood is where the real magic happens.
On this walking tour, you’ll discover the revolutionary 20th-century style that reshaped the city, where buildings burst with whimsical figures and intricate botanical designs. I’ll guide you through the Art Nouveau era, unveiling the symbolism behind each masterpiece. I’ll share the architectural mysteries left by their creators and point out the hidden features that even locals often overlook.
Starting at Plaça de la Porta de la Mar, you’ll begin with the early masterpieces of Valencia’s most renowned and celebrated architect, Francisco Javier Goerlich. You’ll see Valencia’s very first example of Art Nouveau, the over 100-year-old Edificio de los Dragones, and other captivating examples of the architectural style.
As you walk, I’ll share the history of Gran Vía del Marqués del Túria, the most prestigious and greenest street in this neighbourhood, and its distinguished residents. You’ll hear the little-known, somewhat bittersweet story of the House of Swallows. You’ll also delve into the enchanting world of Casa Ortega, a building that mesmerises with its intricate design, where our tour ends.
Along the way, you’ll have the chance to:
- Explore Valencia’s Golden Triangle and imagine your dream home on these streets
- Discover the groundbreaking innovations that revolutionised architecture and ushered in the Art Nouveau era
- Find out about the architectural and historical connection between Valencia and Vienna
- Marvel at the magnificent Mercat de Colón, a meticulously restored market hall adorned with extraordinary bas-reliefs featuring roosters, crabs, and other whimsical motifs
- Learn more about Valencian culture and famous local words from the province that are recognised around the world
By the end of this 90-minute walk, you’ll understand why Valencia is one of Europe’s hidden Art Nouveau gems. You’ll also gain the tools to read this style like an intriguing book, one that has been sharing its secrets and stories for over a century.
There are plenty of charming local spots like cosy cafés, gourmet bakeries, and wine bars to stop at along the way.
