About the Tour

Vaasa’s maritime heritage and artistic expression mingle on every corner. On this walking tour, you’ll discover how this bilingual city rose from ashes to become a cultural stronghold, exploring its architectural landmarks, waterfront vistas, and the stories of resilience that shaped its character.

The tour begins at Kauppatori (Market Square) by the city’s own “Statue of Liberty,” commemorating Finland’s independence. You’ll stroll through the pedestrian-friendly city center with its striking sculptures and historic buildings, and past the magnificent City Hall designed by Swedish architect Magnus Isæus. Along the way, you’ll learn how this city reinvented itself after the devastating fire of 1852.

You’ll hear about the city’s maritime heritage along the harbor promenade, where you can pause to enjoy views of the small boat marina and iconic VAASA letters, perfect for photos. The tour ends at Hietalahti Park, a wooded area featuring tribute spaces to Vaasa’s international sister cities.

During this 45-minute experience, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Admire several sculptures by prominent Finnish artists scattered throughout pedestrian areas, including the Court of Appeal Park
  • Explore Church Park, home to the impressive Trinity Church in its English Gothic style, with traces of bombardment from the Winter War
  • Learn about the Lotta Svärd organization through its memorial honoring Finnish women’s wartime contributions
  • Discover how the Great Fire of 1852 completely transformed the city’s location and architecture
  • Visit the old fishing harbor that was crucial to Vaasa’s development since its founding in in 1606
  • Walk past the historic Vaasa Prison, guarding the city since 1863
  • View the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church, reflecting Russian influence in 19th century Finland
  • See the cultural institutions like the Museum of Ostrobothnia and the Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art that make Vaasa a center for arts and education

Take this tour to experience a city where maritime history, architectural beauty, and Finnish resilience come together in perfect harmony.

In the northern reaches of Europe, amidst the crisp air and breathtaking landscapes, resides an Arctic storyteller whose words weave magic into the frozen silence. Meet Lars Engerengen, a passionate narrator of the Arctic wilderness, a voice that carries the echoes of history and the whispers of untamed nature.

Living beneath the shimmering Northern Lights and the endless glow of the Midnight Sun, Lars discovered his fascination for the Arctic’s lore in childhood. Nights spent listening to age-old tales by the fireside sparked a curiosity that would shape his life’s journey. That spark grew into a flame as he ventured across icy tundras, sailed through fjords, and trekked along snow-laden paths, collecting stories etched into the land and its people.

His storytelling is more than words—it is an immersive experience. With a voice that soothes and inspires, Lars transports listeners to remote landscapes where ancient myths meet modern realities. Through his narratives, one feels the biting wind, hears the crunch of snow underfoot, and senses the resilience of those who carved out life in this harsh yet beautiful region.

Lars doesn't tell you everything, but he tells you enough to pique your curiosity. Enough to make you want to learn more. Enough to make you want to stay a while longer.

Join Lars on a journey beyond the ordinary—a voyage into the soul of the Arctic. Each tale is an invitation to explore a world where nature reigns supreme, and history lingers in every frozen breath. Step into the story, and let the Arctic speak through him.
