About the Tour

The unique Dutch concept of gezelligheid (warm coziness) is part of what makes Utrecht‘s lifestyle so irresistibly charming. On this walking tour, you‘ll discover Utrecht through a local‘s eyes, exploring the cozy neighborhoods, hidden terraces, and everyday spots that tourists often miss – but where the real soul of the city reveals itself.

The tour starts at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht‘s innovative music palace built on floating platforms. You‘ll wander through the pedestrian streets of Wijk C, where tiny workers‘ houses from the 1800s now amplify the cheerful sounds of karaoke from Café Ome Willem. As you walk, you‘ll cross the medieval Weerdsluis (watergate) dating back to 1440, which once defended the city by flooding northern fields.

You‘ll discover Utrecht‘s unique two-level canal system with its werfkelders (wharf cellars), medieval storage spaces now transformed into waterside cafés and jazz clubs. You‘ll hear about the city‘s distinctive architecture, from the city‘s narrowest house on Hopakker Street to the hidden Willibrord Church. The tour ends at Café Lebowski beneath the 112-meter Dom Tower, where locals gather on colorful terraces to enjoy craft beers while listening to the tower‘s bells – Utrecht‘s heartbeat guiding cyclists home.

On this 45-minute tour, you‘ll have a chance to:

  • Witness the spectacle of Utrecht‘s manual watergate operations and learn about the city‘s innovative “Fishdoorbell” that helps migrating fish navigate the canals
  • Spot bright green rose-ringed parakeets in the trees along the Oudegracht canal
  • Explore Jan Meijenstraat, one of the city‘s most charming streets where neighbors still know each other by name and celebrate King‘s Day together
  • Discover the lively craft beer and wine culture at bars like VanderStreek and Vinvin
  • Learn about Utrecht‘s unique relationship with cycling, including the ubiquitous blue-wheeled Swapfiets subscription bikes
  • Visit the hidden Jacobskerkhof Square, which transforms from a quiet cobblestone plaza to Utrecht‘s loudest ”living room” during Pride celebrations
  • Marvel at the street art that transforms once-drab spaces, including the six-meter woman in a scarlet dress looming over Van Asch square
  • Sample local specialties like “Broodje Mario,” Utrecht‘s famous Italian-style sandwich

By the end of this tour, you’ll have a true local‘s perspective on Utrecht. You’ll also know how to enjoy the city just as residents do: by finding the perfect sunny terrace, knowing which bridge offers the best canal view, and feeling the rhythm of this compact yet generous city.

When I travel abroad, I’m that person leaning over the counter to ask the baker, the bartender, or the bus driver for their secret spots.

I love both history and mythologies, combined with learning about the local culture.

Now, I’m channeling that same curiosity back home. Whether it’s a hidden alley, the best sandwich stall before the crowds roll in, or the beer café that opens after midnight, I’m here to pass along the insider keys.

Café Ouwe Dikke Dries

You are now standing in front of Café Ouwe Dikke Dries, old fat Dries, on the left. Please hang around here for a minute.

This “brown café”, brown named for its tobacco-stained interior, has poured Jupiler since 1937. The owner still lines the bar with hard-boiled eggs – a...

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    3km
  2. Distance back to start location
    637.34m

Directions to Starting Point

The tour starts at TivoliVredenburg, the music center. It is easily accessed from Utrecht Central Station. When you walk out of the train station on the Central- side (towards Hoog Catherijne, NOT the exit at Jaarbeurs), you walk straight ahead, with the shopping center on your right side.

You take the escalator down to street-level. You take a right to walk towards the city center, with the bikepath on your left. Once you have crossed the street at the trafficlight, Tivoli is on your right side just after the bridge. There is plenty of room here and you can sit on the stairs at the water when waiting for your friends or family to start the tour.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

I will name many of my favourite places along the way where you can have a drink or eat something. You will not be thirsty or hungry when joining this tour, if you choose to stop there.

Best time of day

From dask to dawn. Some of the cafés that I mention will not be open untill the evening, but you can windowshop and enter them later if you wish.

Precautions

Be carefull when crossing the streets. There are many cyclists and sometimes cars or busses. The werf lower side is not accessable by wheelchair but you can follow the route on the higher street. When the sun is shining, I recommend putting on sunscreen and take a bottle of water with you.
