The Best of Uppsala: A Tour of its Cathedral, Castle, and University
About the Tour
Uppsala is a city of drama and mystery, where every landmark hides a secret from the past. On this walking tour, you’ll walk in the footsteps of royals like Queen Catherine Jagiellon and scientists like Carl von Linne. Their remarkable stories demonstrate how this Swedish city is a hub of innovation.
The tour begins in front of the gate to Linnaeus Garden – the country’s oldest botanical garden. As you stroll through the Old Town’s charming streets along the Fyris River, you’ll learn about Carl von Linne’s unlikely journey to becoming a famous botanist, and hear the quirky tale of how Uppsala University was founded. You’ll see Uppsala Cathedral, where you’ll hear turbulent stories about royals and discover how the Sture Murders changed the course of Swedish history and paved the way for a new era of kings.
As you continue your walk, you’ll pass Helga Trefaldighets Kyrka (a small medieval church), the grand Uppsala University Library, and the Royal Gardens on your way to Uppsala Castle. Along the path, unexpected tales – from the exotic fruits brought to Sweden and breastfeeding traditions – connect to modern-day Uppsala. The tour finishes at a magnificent city viewpoint outside the castle, where you can learn about modern Uppsala’s strong science and innovation scene.
On this 75-minute tour, you’ll:
- Discover thriving student life and quirky traditions at Uppsala University
- Touch Runic Inscription 489, a real Viking-age stone artifact
- Delve into royal traditions and coronation ceremonies at Uppsala Cathedral
- Follow the dramatic life story of Queen Catherine Jagiellon, a true European Renaissance princess
- Admire the Castle’s Gunilla Bell, which was used to communicate with citizens on the Bastion Styrbiskop
By the end of this tour, you’ll have a deeper appreciation for Uppsala – a city of royals, scholars, and enduring legends that shaped Sweden into what it is today.

Ausra Visocke
Hi! I’m Ausra — originally from the Baltics and now living in Sweden for almost ten years. For the past seven years, I have worked as a professional tourist guide, leading international groups in Stockholm and across the Nordic region. People repeatedly say that they feel my passion and my tours are among the very best they ever had!
Now, as a mother of three young children, my opportunities to travel frequently are more limited. But thanks to VoiceMap, I can continue sharing my favourite stories and guide you through wonderful cities in the Nordics.
I hold degrees in Social Sciences and have a deep interest in history, cultural traditions, and the stories that connect countries around the Baltic Sea. What I truly love is weaving separate historical events into one meaningful, connected story of a city, a country, or even an entire region of Northern Europe.
In my tours, you will discover connections between:
– past and present
– major historical events and modern cultural identity
– powerful personalities and the story of a nation.
One of the key historical figures in many of my tours is Katarina Jagiellon, the Lithuanian-Polish princess who became Queen of Sweden. Her story connects Stockholm, Uppsala, Vaxholm, Kaunas, and Tallinn and reveals how the Baltic Sea region was shaped by dynastic politics and religious conflicts. It is also a powerful lady who was often overshadowed by her husband, the King, but I am on a mission to tell her remarkable story to the world! (and to connect Europe from Italy to Sweden through her international influence too).
Cities where I offer self-paced audio tours:
-Stockholm Old Town (Gamla Stan)
- Central Stockholm
- Uppsala
- Vaxholm
- Tallinn Old Town
- Kaunas Old Town
- more upcoming in 2026!
I am proud that some of my self-paced tours are top-ranked on platforms such as Viator and TripAdvisor.
If you are looking for a self-guided audio tour in Sweden or the Baltics and a historically rich walking tour experience, you are in the right place.
Thank you for choosing to explore Northern Europe with me.
