The Town of Happy Moments: A Trogir Old Town Tour
About the Tour
Discover Trogir‘s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just off the Dalmatian coast where, over the centuries, an array of conquerors left their mark. On this walking tour, we’ll follow these historical footprints along the little island’s glistening shoreline, and delve deep into Trogir‘s story.
Starting in front of Trogir‘s Northern Gate, you‘ll step through this historical portal and learn about the island‘s Greek and Roman periods. You'll zip through a labyrinth of narrow streets toward the picturesque main square that surrounds Saint Lawrence‘s Cathedral. After a stroll along Trogir Promenade, you’ll follow this tiny island‘s shoreline back to the Northern Gate where our tour ends. Along the way, I‘ll tell you what the area was like under Greek, Roman, Venetian, French, Austro-Hungarian, and Yugoslavian rule. You‘ll also take in Pasike, a serene neighbourhood where you‘ll see Saint Mark‘s Tower, an impressive example of Venetian architecture.
On this Trogir tour, you‘ll have a chance to:
- Take in the island‘s medieval heritage, architecture, and art
- Find out about Kamerlengo Castle‘s strategic role in protecting the port
- Hear the story of Saint Lawrence‘s martyrdom at Saint Lawrence's cathedral
- Learn the reason behind the town‘s nicknames, ‘The Little Venice’ and ‘The Town of Happy Moments’
- Pass through the Southern Gate (or Sea Gate) and walk along Riva Promenade, beside the sea
- Discover how the Black Plague prompted the building of Saint Sebastian‘s Church, the town‘s second church
- Explore Pasike, a former peasants‘ neighborhood, while you follow the path that goes all around the tiny island
By the end of this one-hour tour, you‘ll have a better understanding of the rich history, local lifestyle, and peculiar details that make Trogir so unique. You‘ll also get recommendations on what to do and see after the tour.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
This tour does not require entering any museums or sites (with entrance fees). However, the sites will be suggested for visiting after the tour. The listener may also pause the audio tour to visit the sites when they are mentioned and explained on the recording, and continue listening upon leaving the site (this refers to St. Lawrence’s cathedral and Kamerlengo fortress).
If you want to sit down for a while during the tour, it can be pleasant to sit at one of the coffee shops on the main square while you listen to the recordings about the sites located on it and/ or on one of the benches on Riva promenade with views of the sea and the island of Čiovo.
Best time of day
It is possible to do the tour all year long, every day of the week including holidays because there is no entry to museums or other sites that operate on a schedule. However, you should bear in mind that if you are visiting from May to October, the busier part of the year, the streets might be crowded with people and there might be background noise. My suggestion is to do the tour early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Also, if you are visiting in winter, from November to February, note that it gets dark already by 4 or 5 pm, so make sure you finish the tour before that time. Summer months can be very hot, with scorching sun, and winter days can be rainy and/ or windy.
Precautions
I suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes.
