Medieval Streets and Gourmet Eats: A Guide to the City of Tours
About the Tour
Tours is a city with Roman origins that entices you to explore its rich historical heritage.
During this walking tour, you’ll discover the city’s remarkable evolution, from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, through the Renaissance, and up to today. You’ll also see how each era has left its mark in Balzac’s birthplace.
The tour begins at Place Châteauneuf, where the imposing Charlemagne Tower stands, a remnant of the former Saint-Martin Collegiate Church. You’ll stroll along charming cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses from the 1400s, admire Renaissance mansions with their finely sculpted facades, and even discover a secret medieval passage. Throughout the tour, you’ll receive recommendations for local products and restaurants showcasing the Loire Valley’s gastronomic heritage.
The tour ends in the heart of the city, the Place Jean Jaurès where you'll be able to admire the imposing Town Hall.
During this 90-minute tour, you’ll also have the opportunity to:
- Discover significant monuments like the Charlemagne Tower, the Saint-Gatien Cathedral, and the Tours Opera (Opéra de Tours)
- Visit Place Plumereau for an aperitif, ranked among the most beautiful squares in France
- Admire Renaissance mansions, including Hôtel Goüin with its Italian-inspired façade
- Hear the surprising history of Tours as a pioneer in silk production in France
- Contemplate the works of Tours architect Victor Laloux, also known for designing the Musée d’Orsay in Paris
- Stroll through the covered market and discover several Touraine specialties, including rillettes and the pastry called “le Nougat de Tours”
By the end of this tour, you’ll have seen how Tours’ historical heritage has been woven into its streets and architecture over the centuries, evoking tales of medieval life.
Tour Producer
Food-trotter
Food-Trotter was born from my passion for discovering cities through both their history and their food.
I design self-guided audio walking tours that invite travelers to explore a destination at their own pace, while listening to stories about its heritage, neighborhoods and local life.
I personally research, write and record each tour, with a warm and engaging narrative style, as if you were walking through the city with a local friend.
While my tours focus on cultural discovery, I also love to highlight good food spots, local products and culinary traditions, because for me, food is an essential part of understanding a place.
Food-Trotter tours are designed for curious travelers who enjoy walking, learning, and experiencing cities in a relaxed, authentic way.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
This tour includes lots of food place advice all along the way to eat out or for your local food shopping.
Best time of day
From dawn to dusk, or before lunch or dinner time as the tour includes lots of food place advice. Be aware that some stores are easily closed on Sundays and Mondays in France. The tour last about 90 minutes without stops, for 5km long. But if you want to take your time to enjoy some of the food spots I advise, or visit some monuments I indicate all along the tour (museums, religious monuments,...) I recommend to allocate 3 to 4 hours of your time to complete the tour.
Precautions
It's best to wear comfortable shoes and take a bottle of water with you for the tour. The route is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
