About the Tour

Embark on a captivating journey through Toledo's storied Warehouse District, where echoes of the past mingle with the vibrant energy of the present. Once the bustling epicenter of Toledo's commercial and industrial hubs, these enchanting streets and rustic edifices now offer a delightful blend of residential spaces, artisanal boutiques, trendy eateries, and art galleries.

Our adventure begins at the historic Sam Okun Produce Company, a fitting starting point to delve into the district's rich heritage. From there, we'll meander down Huron Street, soaking in the architectural marvels that grace its storied sidewalks. Marvel at the striking round arches of the Berdan Warehouse and immerse yourself in the charm of the historical Bronze Boar pub as we traverse the heart of Huron Street Village—one of Toledo's oldest neighborhoods.

As we stroll, award-winning history author and architectural enthusiast Tedd Long will regale you with captivating tales of the district's transformation from an industrial hub to a thriving community of creativity and camaraderie. Discover intriguing anecdotes, including how the University of Michigan nearly ended up in Toledo’s Warehouse District and the colorful history of the Glass City’s infamous red light district, the Tenderloin. Along the way, we'll encounter notable landmarks such as the Civic Auditorium and the bustling Toledo Farmers' Market, each steeped in its own fascinating history.

During our 90-minute tour, you'll:

  • Gain insight into the dynamic blend of architecture and scale that makes this locale ideal for adaptive reuse, a trend that has reshaped the district since the 1990s.
  • Uncover the tales of Toledo's famed Tenderloin District, where government intervention sparked controversy and shaped the district's evolution.
  • Experience the unique fusion of history and culinary delights at the Spaghetti Warehouse, once the Hoppe & Strub Bottling Co.
  • Explore the city's agricultural roots at Toledo’s Farmers' Market.
  • Discover the transformative impact of Fifth Third Field, home to the beloved Toledo Mud Hens baseball team.
  • Unearth the district's quirks, from a museum of oddities to a secret tunnel linked to the Underground Railroad.
  • Witness the adaptive reuse of classic 19th-century brick Italianate-style buildings, now charmingly repurposed as lofts, restaurants, coffee shops, galleries, and pubs.

By the tour's end, you'll have a newfound appreciation for Toledo's historic Warehouse District—a treasure trove of cultural heritage and untold stories. With its well-preserved architectural wonders, vibrant murals, and a culture that seamlessly blends the old with the new, the Warehouse District is not merely a location on the map; it's a chapter of Toledo's narrative waiting to be explored. So, lace up your walking shoes, and let's embark on a journey through the annals of a district that encapsulates the very essence of Toledo's soul!
