Albania’s vibrant capital has been shaped by a complex mixture of influences, from Ottoman pashas to communist dictators and modern politicians. On this walking tour, you’ll find out how Tirana evolved from a modest settlement in the 1600s to a dynamic metropolis. You’ll also hear about the dramatic events of Enver Hoxha’s brutal communist regime from 1944 to 1985, and their significance.

The tour starts at Skanderbeg Square, the heart of Tirana, in front of the Opera and Ballet Theatre. You’ll explore the historic center with its Et’hem Bey Mosque and distinctive Clock Tower, and walk along tree-lined boulevards designed by Italian architects.

You’ll continue through the once-forbidden Block District, where the communist elite lived in secrecy, and discover how this restricted zone transformed into Tirana’s nightlife hub. You’ll visit the Pyramid of Tirana, originally built as Hoxha’s museum, and see architectural remnants that survived Hoxha’s regime’s attempts to rewrite history. The tour ends at the New Bazaar, a vibrant market area.

The museum's housed in a two-story villa with a courtyard that dates from 1931 and originally served as the first private obstetrics clinic in Albania. During the German occupation, the building was used by the Gestapo. After the war it was used as Sigurimi's (Albanian Internal Affairs organization) interception headquarters until the collapse of the communist regime in 1991.

The Museum of Secret Surveillance opened on May 23, 2017. The building's located in the city center. The building's known as the "House of Leaves," so called because of the clambering plants that cover its facade. The villa has 31 rooms inside. The museum was awarded the European Museum of the Year Award 2020 by the Council of Europe.

There are no words to describe the fear. Some estimations believe that one out of four Albanians could potentially be a spy or a collaborator of Sigurimi. Everyone was under surveillance by the regime. You couldn't express discontent.

Punishment depending on the gravity of the offense could go from prison, deportation to remote locations, family deportation, removing the rights to educate family members and the last penalty of death execution or hanging without a grave.

No one was immune from prosecutions at that time. Private life was completely unprotected. Everyone, even your neighbor could spy on you. There were documents containing this kind of information about ordinary people's lives. A word, a song, or a casual meeting could be considered hostile activity.

In one room, you can read the names of 14,359 people imprisoned, tortured, and died during the dictatorship regime. As you enter every room, you feel fear and terror everywhere. The doors, the electronic devices, microphones, bugs, and models from the Soviet Union, China, or East Germany, are all showing the sophisticated tools the regime used to control people's lives. Names, documents, photos from trials, and the hierarchy of the Security State regime follow you in every corner of this house.
