Driving Through Time: A Circular Loop from Tignish to North Cape
About the Tour
Prince Edward Island’s westernmost tip is home to traditional fishing villages, nestled alongside innovative wind farms. On this circular driving tour through Tignish and North Cape’s spectacular natural scenery, you’ll learn about the area’s unique blend of history, nature, and maritime charm.
The tour starts and ends at the magnificent St. Simon and St. Jude Church in Tignish, the spiritual heart of Tignish since 1860. You’ll wind your way through coastal roads to reach the dramatic cliffs of North Cape before making your way to Skinners Pond Beach. Along the way, I’ll share stories about the mysterious Phantom Ship that locals claim still appears on foggy nights, and tell you how Irish moss harvesting shaped the local economy.
You’ll discover how this remote corner of Prince Edward Island has adapted over the years, from the days of the island’s car ban to becoming a leader in renewable energy research. I’ll also tell you about the area’s rich musical heritage and its connection to Canadian folk legend Tom Connors at the Stompin’ Tom Centre.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- Find out how mail reached this remote community at the historic Tignish Post Office
- Explore the serene Black Marsh Nature Trail, home to diverse wildlife and native plant species
- Walk along North Cape Reef, the longest natural rock reef in North America
- See dozens of wind turbines at North Cape Wind Farm and hear about the Wind Energy Institute of Canada
- Take in spectacular views at Phee Shore, where you might spot seals basking on the rocks
- Hear the fascinating local legend of the hoop snake that supposedly rolls like a wheel
- Stand beneath the historic North Cape Lighthouse and learn about its crucial role in maritime safety
- Discover why Tignish proudly calls itself the “Co-op Capital of Canada.”
This 2.5-hour driving tour covers approximately 54 kilometers of Prince Edward Island’s most dramatic coastline. There are plenty of opportunities to stop for photos, and several local restaurants along the way serve fresh seafood and traditional island fare.
Whether you’re a history buff, nature enthusiast, or simply looking to explore one of Canada’s most unique coastal regions, this tour offers something for everyone. Don’t forget your camera – the views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence meeting the Northumberland Strait are truly spectacular!
Tour Producer
Raeann Kinch
Hi there! I'm Raeann, and I've been lucky enough to call Prince Edward Island my home for my entire life. My family's roots here go all the way back to the first Irish settlers who arrived on the island in 1811 - I actually live just a couple of miles away from where they first landed on the beach!
One of my passions is travel, and I always make a point to join a tour when I visit a new place. I find that the knowledge you gain from a tour stays with you long after your trip is over. But I also love to explore on my own and take my time, which is why I created my own tour. You're free to pause it whenever something interesting catches your eye, then jump back in whenever you're ready.
As a local history buff, I'm excited to share some of the fascinating stories and facts about Prince Edward Island with those who take my tour. So if you're looking to learn more about this beautiful island and its rich history, I'd be happy to show you around!

Directions to Starting Point
The Tignish tour begins in the parking lot in front of the St. Simon & St. Jude Catholic Church, located at 313 Church Street, in Tignish.
The Church is locked up for the day at 4:00 PM or 7:00 PM if there is Mass on that particular evening. If you want to view the inside of the Church and you are starting the tour after 2:00 PM, it would be a good idea to go inside before you start. The audio for the interior is the last module in the tour. You can expand your map, and touch the icon with a white flag in a black circle and black headphones around it (in the St. Simon & St. Jude Church building on the map).
Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you’d like a good meal after the tour, I suggest Our Family Traditions on Philip Street in Tignish, or if you are passing through Skinners Pond, stop at the Black Hat restaurant at the Stompin’ Tom Center. If you are looking for something quick or to try Tignish's famous Fries with the Works,
you'll find it at Shirley's Café on Church Street. She also serves ice cream, as does the takeout at Tignish Shore. For fair trade coffee and pastries, be sure to stop in at Broderick's on Philip Street.
Best time of day
From dawn to dusk, May through October. Some roads and attractions may not be open outside of this season.
Precautions
If you are a cautious driver, you may want to listen to location 29 from the top of Norway Road. Phee Shore Road is a one lane typical PEI dirt road, that has some ruts in it and could be messy if it has recently rained. Your vehicle will get red clay on it. If you are in a camper, you may not have room to turn around at the beach to come back up.
