Tenby Walking Tour: Highlights from Pembrokeshire’s Seaside Gem
About the Tour
Known as the jewel in Pembrokeshire’s crown, Tenby has continued to delight visitors for hundreds of years. On this walking tour, you’ll find out how a small town on the edge of Wales’ west coast became the iconic destination it is today.
Starting in Tudor Square, you’ll follow part of the town’s medieval walls while I enchant you with tales of a secret cellar and tunnel that sheltered the future Henry VII. You’ll also find out how the Five Arches gateway provided the town with a clever means of defence. As you make your way through the town, you’ll hear about its early imports and exports, including where the first oranges in Tenby came from. I’ll show you the Prince Albert Memorial, the Tudor Merchant’s House, and Tenby Castle. The tour ends on Castle Hill where you can enjoy spectacular views of our dramatic coastline.
Other highlights on this Pembrokeshire tour include:
- Taking in St Mary’s church and its imposing spire
- Seeing Tenby Harbour, the most photographed harbour in Wales
- Spotting offshore islands like St Catherines and Caldey
- Hearing about the evolution of the landmark Tenby Lifeboat Station
- Learning about the first purpose-built bath house for wealthy visitors
- Finding out about the garderobe, otherwise known as the loo with a view!
- Stopping in front of the oldest surviving house in town, one of several brightly coloured homes that characterize the Georgian town
Take 90 minutes, or go at your own pace as I show you fantastic coastal views and tell you all about the wealth, decline, plague, survival and reinvention which have shaped the Tenby we see today.
