Old Jaffa's Secrets: A Circular Tour from the Clock Tower to Yefet Street
About the Tour
Old Jaffa’s long and twisted tale is filled with familiar characters: Alexander the Great, the Crusaders, and even Napoleon. The city’s collection of artists’ quarters and urban parks overlooking the Mediterranean Sea make it a unique area to explore and enjoy. On this walking tour, you’ll hear the stories behind its beautifully restored and preserved buildings.
Starting near the Jaffa Clock Tower, you’ll follow in the footsteps of a few historic characters who spent time here. As you walk between the gardens of Old Jaffa, I’ll tell you about the city’s long history, and how archaeological findings from the times of the pharaohs were discovered in these gardens.
As you take in the main sites and weave through the Artists’ Quarter, I’ll peel back the area’s layers of history and share how my family, the Chelouche family, helped modernise Jaffa. I’ll show you Andromeda’s Rocks and share the legends that surround it. You’ll also be able to make a wish on top of the Wishing Bridge before heading to the highest point in Old Jaffa.
On this hour-long tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Take in stunning vistas of the Mediterranean Sea and Tel Aviv’s coastline
- Hear snippets of stories from Greek Mythology and the Old Testament which took place in Jaffa
- Decipher the symbols on St Peter’s Church
- Meander through the alleyways, galleries and workshops that populate the Artists’ Quarter
- See the suspended orange tree that keeps on living and growing, despite being uprooted
- Feel the special vibe of Jaffa’s Flea Market area
By the end of this almost circular route, you’ll have a deeper appreciation for this port city’s history.

My family was one of the founding families of Tel Aviv. Unfortunately, they didn't leave me any real estate so I guide tours instead.
I love to tell people about this amazing city. Join me and I hope you'll enjoy all that Tel Aviv has to offer!

The Old Jaffa model is around the corner from Jaffa’s famous clock tower. If you’re located in central Tel Aviv, you can be at the starting point in less than half an hour by taking a bus in the direction of Jaffa. The most fashionable way to get around the city these days is to rent an electric scooter. These are scattered all across Tel Aviv-Jaffa and most are fitted with a detachable helmet for you to wear for safety. You can unlock an e-scooter with a few taps on your smartphone. A taxi is another option, but the price is a bit steep, so take it into account.

Best time of day
A walking tour in Tel Aviv-Jaffa is best done in the morning hours or late afternoon, to avoid the heat. It’s also possible to take this tour at night for a more romantic atmosphere. All the sites are visible seven days a week with no special plans needed before your arrival. During the weekend (Friday-Saturday) Jaffa reaches peak tourism, so it’s recommended to come on other days if you want to avoid the crowds. Sundays are great if you want to see the mass at St. Peter’s church.
Precautions
- The tour is completely accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, but do take into account that there are several ascending sections that will require a bit of an effort. No special physical capability is needed. Just wear a good pair of walking shoes.
- Be mindful when crossing roads and watch your step when walking on narrow sidewalks. Some of the route goes through pedestrianised areas, but from time to time you’ll share the road with oncoming traffic.
- With 300 days of sunshine a year in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, there’s a high degree of certainty that you’ll experience heat and humidity. Bring a hat, wear sunscreen and always have a bottle of water with you, preferably a reusable one.
